Bobcats Vs. 444 Marlin Handi-Rifle
« on: January 22, 2008, 08:35:57 AM »
I was deer hunting Yesterday morning when a rabbit ran by my stand and not that far behind was a bobcat; 10 mins. later another bobcat appeared another 10 mins. another bobcat. I was 3 for 3 and beginning to think I was gonna have to leave for more ammo. Get this, the evening before a coyote was chasing possibly the same rabbit down the same path, couldn't get a shot on him though. Anyway hopefully the bunnies will rest a little easier in my neck of the woods.

Using Hornady 265 gr. Light Magnums out of a 444 Marlin Ultra Handi-rifle.

Pics coming soon. Quick is helping with that. Thanks!

Very good story. I also have a 444 Marlin (just got it). I put the cinnamon lams on it and it looks real good; but the gray(pepper) looks real good too. I still have not picked out a scope for mine yet. I haven't decided to go with a red dot, or a lower powered scope. That looks like a nice rig for low light conditions. What scope are you using?

Nice pics and a good looking Handi too.
I too just got a 444 and haven't scoped it out yet, I am kinda leaning towards a 2-7x32 Weaver. Something lower powered and light.
Thanks for sharing.

Wow!  I've never even seen a bobcat in the GA woods but my friend did get one back before Christmas.  But getting 3 of them back-to-back - very cool!  8)

I've got to ask - and please don't think I am being critical, just want to understand
Why did you shoot the bobcats?
Are they considered a varmint in your area? Are the skins valuable?
Like I said, just curious

Nice Shootin!  Man am I jealous!!!

BTW, the 444 wouldn't blow up a bob cat as the cat doesn't have enough body mass to make the bullet expand. Big hole in and big hole out. When I first got my marlin 45-70 I shot a groundhog at 30 yards or so. Got him right thru the shoulder. Big hole in and big hole out. Same thing...not enough body mass to make the bullet expand.

Don't know about his area, but their varmints in my area. Looks like ya got mama, and her two student kittens. Ran across that myself several years ago. Bobcats are usually born in pairs around my part of Texas, and they stay with mama for longer than most folks think.

ICC,

That's a great story!  :)  What type of terrain were you hunting?  I worked in west KS/east CO for many years and the draws and creek bottoms concentrated the rascals there.  Funny how you'd think that that would make it easy to control the population...but no, not in the least.  They sure played major havoc on the turkey population there.  I shot several with .22's over the years, and it was always lights out...never had chance or occassion to use something bigger...nice to see the results of your .44.  Distance to target?  Good luck on ya...ever tried Bobcat jerky?  (just joshin')  ...I think that Dee's observations on them being a family group are correct...on more than one occassion I'd snare mature and immature on the same day in sets that were along the same trail.

O.K. to answer some of the questions;

The scope is a 3-9or10? X50 A cheap Simmons scope I bought on clearance (actually bought 3, put 1 on my step-dads 45-70 as a gift) I had a Nikon 3-9 X40 on my Buffalo Classic and yes the Cheap Simmons 50 objective let in more light than the Nikon 40 but again that is what a larger objective is supposed to do.

LaOtto and myarmor I am actually in y'all same shoes I also just got the new 444 a couple of weeks ago, I chose the Checkered Camo-Laminate stocks to replace the pallet-wood and I have yet to mount a scope on it, considering a Nikon, Leupold or Zeiss but I definitely want a 50 objective; My intended use is a deer-hunting rig so it may be different from your intended use. As you may or may not know the 444 pictured is the Ultra with the old 1:38 twist, the new ones have the 1:20 so thats why I'm rigging up another to shoot the Leverevolution ammo as the ballistics are better/flatter.

The terrain where pictured is a creek crossing on hardwood mats, I shot all 3 at 80-90 yds. in a hardwood bottom in South Mississippi on my property, the 444 Handi is a legal Primitive Firearm for our deer season here, During Firearm Season I hunt with a Remington 700 30-06 mostly; although I do have Lever 30-30 and a  new Bolt-action 300WSM which I also need to mount a scope  on.

Yes the Interpretations were correct it was no doubt a Momma cat that was giving chase on the rabbit she was the only 1 chasing and the others were not even around till several minutes later, they actually came to hunt their momma all 3 were killed within 20-30 feet of each other, they were not very small kittens and the young male had paws much bigger than mommas.

Yes they are definitely  Varmints/predators here, Bobwhite Quail pop. dwindling, not as many rabbits as when I was younger, and I'm sure they get some squirrels and of course I have to protect our Wild Turkeys; we have cattle  though I don't view them as a threat to them.

Hurricane Katrina has also changed our local landscape as all our biggest Oaks were blown down and now instead of a fairly open-shaded understory we have briar's and thicker understory, (ambush sites for turkey predators) which has and will continue to cause Predator populations to explode and since the Fur prices are of little to no value and no one traps anymore, well we have to keep them in check for the local wildlife if nothing else.

Bob A a lady asked me something similar "Why did you kill 3 bobcats?"
 I replied "well cause I didn't see the 4th 1!"

As for as damage from the 444; the other sides of the cats are not as photogenic for the average possible cat-loving Forum member! I used  Discretion when placing, and I do admire them for their Beauty and as a Predator with great stealth, its amazing how they blend so well, only when they would move could you pick them up against the leaves in the hardwoods.

I am gonna get a Rug done with the biggest cat.

Thanks, and will be glad to answer any other ?s

Great answer!

My PETA donating sister-in-law once ask me "how can you shoot those pretty whitetail deer?" I told her it wasn't hard. You just line 'em up in the crosshairs and squeeze the trigger.

Wow nice shoot'n.

Consider yourself very lucky to even be able to legally shoot them.
Here in Wisconsin, we have over 8000 people each year apply for less than 2000 bobcat hunting tags.  Of those 2000, there is less than a 10% hunt success rate.  In my 10 years of predator hunting I've only seen one, and I couldn't even aim at it.

While we are on the subject of bobcats, take a look at this one's appetite...  I thought they only ate small rodents.

Neat!  Wish I could see the pics... all I see is a white box.  :(
I had a male walk under my stand and down a row of planted pines, marking his territory as he went, a couple of weeks ago.  But maybe he was just mad because the turkey he had been stalking had spotted him.  I thought about letting him hold one from my 35 Whelen, but let him go on.  His fur was to pretty to make that big a hole in!

Assuming you are here hunting in GA (assumption based on your name and location) - good call on not shooting him with the .35.  While it is the bobcat season in GA, it's just rimfires, shotguns and muzzleloaders on those guys.  I agree about the fur being too pretty - my anti-hunting wife wouldn't allow it in the house so it wouldn't do me any good to shoot one anyhow..   :-[

Great job! It is rare indeed to see so many at the same time...though not completely uncommon.
I've seen two together in the past, though it was near mating season and they were dancing in the middle of a fire trail.

I've got to ask - and please don't think I am being critical, just want to understand
Why did you shoot the bobcats?
Are they considered a varmint in your area? Are the skins valuable?

Good pelts are very valuable--IF taken VERY good care of and having minimal damage--Sometimes in excess of $800.
It seems in some states they are MUCH more common than others.

Up here in N/W Washington, I see at least half a dozen a year. Some while calling, others just flukes.  They are EVERYWHERE around here.
Bobcat season is open for about 6 1/2 months, and there is NO bag limit. No special tag required (just a small game license).

Just last week I heard that in Texas there is an average of one bobcat per 100acres of land. That is a LOT of cats!

Wow nice shoot'n.

My first bobcat, taken in 2006, was feasting on the carcass of a blacktail doe.  I cannot determine if the cat killed the deer, or stumbled across the carcass, but I saw no other signs of death (no other tracks in the snow, bullet wounds, etc). They are quite stealthy and capable hunters.
FWIW, this was also a fairly small cat...female...approx. 2years old.

DUH!  Of course you're right! What WAS I thinking!!!   :o
I really hate being senile...  I just hope I remember that little fact you pointed out if and when one walks up while I'm using an electronic call and my .243 for coyotes before turkey season!!  :)

bscman, Oh come on man where did you hear $800 a pelt. That's gotta be hearsay!

I just spoke with a local trapper and actually the bobcat are now the highest priced paid hide of our Native wildlife here even higher than otter, which in the past have brought the most, but still only $30-$50; I must admit it is higher than I had originally thought.

I had actually thought the Local Chinese Restaurant would pay more for the meat by the pound than the skin was worth, but they only wanted domestic cat when I called.

Here in Okla guys have been geting 80 to 150 a cat just depends on how well the pelt is, and the 150 is for the bigger male cats but they have to be good hides. last year a trapper freind of mine said he seen a guy get 500 for 3 cats ;D WOW what a pay day

We have a healthy population of bobcats here in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
I see them crossing the dirt roads or hunting in the grass lands every week. I had no idea
how much $$$ the pelts bring.
They aren't as brave as the coyotes and don't seem to hang around the house and barn, so I
never really thought of them as varmints or harmful predators like the coyotes.

Way to go IC,man what a day you had,one would be something but three!! There has been 4 killed this month within 5 miles of where I live, and quite a few more sighted that I've heard of and hard to tell how many I haven't heard of.Not bad for an area not know for cats  :)
