Not hard at all, Dangerous but not hard. I'm assuming your talking about a contender here. The contender was never designed to handle the 444 cartridge. I know some people do rechamber them but in my opinion they are flirting with desaster. Not to mention prematurly wearing out a good frame. Why not get youself an Encore? much better suited for it and you can load to it's full potential. Just my $.02   KN

Is the 444 marlin a higher pressure cartridge than the 45-70 which is a standard chambering in the Contender?

I'll put in my  :money: worth.I have a 444 Super-14 rechamber and I will not sale,or trade it fer nutten I love it!!!!!! Call SSK talk to them they will do it.I can load FULL HOUSE LOADS IN IT and the cases just fall out.I'm getting 2156fps with just 47.2grs of H-4198 and 1/2" to 1" groups.Think about this if the 444Marlin's not safe in the Contender than HOW CAN A 309JDJ,358 JDJ or 375JDJ be safe the parent case for them is the 444...?SSK has been doing the recambering thing a long time call them and just ask.

Try this link.   I had a 35 rem barrel rechambered to 358 JDJ.   I  Love It.    The cost was $75 plus shipping at that time.    2-3 week turn around at that time.  When ever I had a ? JD always e-mailed back next business day.  I will do business with them again.

PJ, Please let me clarify my reply a little. I know SSK and several others do rechambers to 444. BUT, you gotta admit it's pushing the edge. Heck TC even warns not to shoot heavy bullets in their 45/70 because of "undo wear and tear on the frame". That comes from the TC load book. Will you ever blow one up as long as your careful? Probably not. I just think if you really want the most out of a 444 or larger that an Encore is a better way to go.   This is only my opinion and I have no facts to back it up. I guess my big problem with it I have seen too many basement reamer jobs showing up at the gun shows. And I know I dont I don't consider those safe. Dang now I've gone and spent $.04.   KN

PJ,

I have a 14" Hunter that, based upon your post, I think I would be a good canidate to have rechambered to the 444 Marlin.

On that data that you posted, what bullet were you using with that load?  I am wondering how the 444 Marlin would do with a .430 Lee 310 grain gas check?

Has anyone had any experience with the T/C muzzle tamer on the 444 Marlin?

Sorry I left it out, it was a 240gr XTP that load is mild in my gun.I would like to try some 320gr SSK cast bullets.I think with those 320's I would have a bear droper.

I cast those Lee 310's and shoot them in my 10" barrel with good results.  Haven't tried them in the Hunter yet.

But I was wondering if the twist of the T/C 14" Hunter with the longer 310 grain bullet would be adequate for the increased velocity of the .444 Marlin?

Actually I was thinking about the 444 for elk.

Tom,

I've heard that gas checked bullets and a muzzle break sometimes cause problems.  I like to shoot 265 gr. Hornady FP in my 444 barrels and even shot a silouette match with solid hunting loads and scored a 34x40 my first time over the course.

I think the 445 might be a little More efficient in a 14 inch barrel and it will be safe to  shoot . and you may be able to get away with using the 44 magnum dies you already have on hand .
