6.5 x 55 Tack Driver
« on: January 22, 2008, 02:45:37 PM »
I have killed a few deer with my 550 6.5 x 55 but never got alot of respect from my hunting buddies on this rifle.  I think Sunday changed the minds of a few.  I always used it as my long range rifle and used it for cut over and power line hunting.  Many of my buddies made comments that I should not take any shots over 300 yards with that rifle because It wasn't powerful enough.  I will admit I knew I could shoot it at 500 yards but I didn't know for sure if it would take a deer at that range.  Well, it will!!!

Today at 540 yards (with range finder) I was able to shoot a doe and she didn't go 10 yards and feel dead.  Now I know many will not condone shooting at this distance and would not either except I was shooting from a bench.

For anyone thinking of the round I can tell you it will hammer out the deer.

The load I am using is 43g H380 with 100g Nosler Partition and Lapa Brass

Cool!  A lot of folks also don't think of the .308 Win as being a long range cartridge.  But the longest shot I have ever attempted at a big game animal was with it out of my Win 70 Classic Stainless Ultralight with a handload of RL-15 and a Speer 150gr Spitzer Hot-Core bullet.  And I made it.  One shot kill.  Perfect bullet placement. BUT, I was shooting from a rest and I had been practicing a LOT shooting metallic silhouettes out to 500 meters (about 547 yards).

If you know the rifle, the load, the wind, and the range, and have the skill and shooting position to take advantage of that knowledge, you can do amazing things with it.
