I inherited a fairly beat up old Mossberg 46m(a) from my deceased father-in-law.  It had 20 years of dust on, and in it.  The front sight posts that fold over will not come completely up and as a result the rear sight's windage is maxed out.  But for an old, neglected iron-sighted .22 I can still keep 5 shots under 3/4" @ 25yds consistantly with cheap CCI Blazer ammo.

It might not win any matches, but it's fun to plink around with.

My first gun 50+ years ago was a Stevens .22 auto.  I still have it.  My dad was a great shot and we spent many hours shooting that gun.  He could keep a can in the air and I got to the point that I could break twigs in a stream below us at about 25 yds.
Anyway I was in a country gun shop and saw about 5 or 6 of this model along with Savage and Springfield, all were the same with some small deviations for sale, around $ 35-60.  They must have been popular in the midwest.
Anyway this is a great gun and if you see one think about buying.  I think I will buy another also.

I picked this TOZ 8M a while back i got to say it the best rabbit rifle i have seen by far they were made around the mid thirties as a all round target and hunting .22LR. Very good shooter with a big bull barrel the only thing that some people turn their nose up at is that it’s a single shot but i say when you have a rifle this good you only need one shot.

She may not look like much but she can do a lot

I just picked up a nice old mossberg 340 that looked to be in excellent condition, can't shoot open sights anymore so I put a bushnell 4X .22 scope on it-it shoots very well, these old mossbergs are well finished and solid as well as being accurate.

Chappers;
That looks like a great old gun. I guess those bunnies can be a real problem in Australia. I heard those Winchester Power-Points were developed with Australian rabbits in mind. Do you use those Winnie rounds often ?

Cheers mate, well yes those rabbits are a real problem in Australia. They mainly “ringbark” trees and kill them and also cause a lot of soil erosion.
We have tried as a nation alto of ways of trying to get rid of the little buggers, from the simple methods of ripping up burrows and hunting, then the complicated ways such as releasing the Myxo and the calicivirus and them they just stupid ways... trying to build a rabbit-proof fence that was about 3000km long and took six years to build.

I use two types of round, the Federal copper plated solids for long shots (in the day when your shots are around the 100 to 250m) and the CCI standards  (for at night when spot lighting and shot are closer in).
I don’t chose these because the brand but the type of projectile and how well they shoot in my rifle.
So i don’t use Winnie ammo but if they shoot well in your rifle go for them, just as a rule of thumb if you are shooting to about 75m then your favourite lead nose round points will do the trick but beyond that i would use a copper plated solids that got a bit more kick than your standard 22LR.
I hoped that helped,

Cheers

And for the long shots i had to give that old rifle of mine some extras

Discarded Winchester 141
« Reply #67 on: October 09, 2009, 01:40:43 PM »
Several years ago, a friend traded his old, beat up Win 141 to me for some goodies. The rifle looked poorly, with some rust spots, a loose stock and a broken rear sight; so I oiled it up and stored it away. Recently, looking through the tools, I thought to get rid of the 141 since I never fired it. However, I decided to function and accuracy test it before disposing of it. Mounted a good scope on the grooved receiver, bore sighted it, wiped out the barrel, and took it to the range with a selection of target to plinking rounds. At 50yds this piece of junk grouped at LESS than 0.5 inch with some good target ammo and even with some high speed types. A few ammo selections gave up to 1 1/2 inch groups, but not many. I was amazed!!!!!!  This pencil thin barrel, in a factory inletted stock was shooting better than some expensive 22s. Decision, what to do. Answer - NEVER get rid of a shooter!! So I went to work fixing the metal, fixing the inletting, smoothing the stock. Still shoots great (less than 1/2 inch with good ammo) Lesson learned.

Stevens Model 417-2 Walnut Hill with a Pope barrel.  First competion my wife ever shot was a 100 benchrest match with this rifle.  She place second shooting against guys with their Rem. 40xs and Win. 52s.  She had a lot of guys coming by to see what the heck she was shooting.  Most could not believe they way that old gun shot.  Course the wife wasn't bad either.

I've got two older rifles that shoot way beeter than I can.  An old Wichester 69 with the peep sight and a Marlin 39A made in 1964 that I just put a Lyman aperature sight on.  Both shoot like mad with ammo they like.  The Winchester and I went out and collected a couple of bushytails yesterday. :)  I think if that gun had legs it would be able to go hunting without me!  I have a Remington Nylon model 11 carbine (for those that don't know what that one is, it is a bolt action magazine fed Nylon.  Sort of rare I am told.)  which is also very accurate but really difficult to shoot well becuase it is sooooooo light weight.

I've got a Winchester Model 52.  I once checked the date of mfg, with the serial #.  It was mfg in 1932 or 1933, I don't remember which.
As you would expect it's a tack driver.
I have only shot it with the ladder peep sight it came with.
It will shoot better than me, I've never put a scope on it.
My only complaint is there's no feasible way of mounting a modern scope without drilling or something that would alter it's originality.

OK, you asked for it. First is my BSA model 12, then the BSA 12/15, love those old single shots. Then my 1946 52B winchester and a H&R M12 purchased from the CMP which by the way was one of the greatest bargains ever. $300 and with
a redfield Palma rear sight and international front sight. Its almost like buy the rifle we'll give you the sights free. Years back when it was on the market russian brass cased "Junior" shoots great in both martini's. The two heavy target rifles haven't been shot in years but seem to remember using ely "benchrest gold" or something along those lines. For plinking I have a marlin bolt action model 25 that shoots the low priced stuff. Years ago had a win 69A that would pop rocks at 100yds and only had a 4x tasco on it. Sadly in a moment of supreme stupidity I sold it. Long live the martini's. Frank

The pre '64 Winchester 69,69A, 75S & T, 52 series when you find the prefect ammunition can surprise you in calm conditions. I have seen my younger brother in law who is an amazing shooter put three touching @ 100 yards with aperture sights with a 75T. Even he was surprised and came away with a smile and the comment "I can't believe how accurate this thing shoots"....Matched chamber and barrel and Lapua Midas "L" .569MM in dead calm air, right temperature, humidity, time of day. Just one of those perfect combinations to create a memory. Most of the time I will get a loose group blown a few inches off center at that distance.

I've got a Winchester model 60 that I traded a friend out of in the late 50's. It shoots better than I can shoot it with almost any cheap ammo.

My uncle had this old Marlin -a detachable magazine-fed, turnbolt rifle.  It was a nicely proportioned, sleek rifle -not the same as what Marlin currently produce.  I wish I could remember what the model number was.  I've never seen another like it.

He used to leave it up at the family hunting cabin.  Sadly, it got burned up in the same wildfire event that torched my cherished Griffin and Howe Springfield.

That old Marlin .22, though, shot even better than it looked.

If I ever DO see another like it, and the owner is willing to part with it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

Just wish I could remember exactly what "it" was!

Probably the favorite .22 that I own is an old Remington Nylon 66 (Apache Black, chromed barrel) that I purchased a long time ago, believe it was back in the 1960's.

Hate to think how many thousand rounds of "Super X" have been put through that gun, in all types of weather conditions, and it still performs as well as when new.

It has a good 6X range finding Mil-Dot scope mounted, and at 50 yards 5/8" groups are normal.

Not a very good picture, but below is a typical 50 yard grouping.  Most of the group was right at 5/8", with a couple flyers that are no doubt my fault and not the guns.

The .22 I was most impressed with was a Mossberg semi-auto. Not sure of the model number but the forend would fold down vertically. It belongs to a friend of mine and I can shoot a ragged hole at 25 yards off hand with the factory open sights. I've never been into semi-autos but man can that thing shoot.

I have a Stevens Crackshot that has been thru the mill.  It looks like someone used a ball peen hammer on the right side of the receiver to loosen up the screws.  The lever pivot screw is a hex head machine screw.  I jury-rigged an old Bushnell 3/4" pistol scope with an airgun clamp-on mount on it to see what it can do an was shocked to get a 5/16" 3-shot group at 50 Yd. with Winchester Super-X ammo!  That is the best group I have gotten, but several others were in the <3/4" range.  I just put a Williams peep on it.  It will be my backpack rifle.

My two current favorites are my CZ 452 "Super Exclusive". Its a 29" barreled sharp shooter! I have a Bushnell Trophy 6X18x40AO scope mounted.

Second, is my semi custom Marlin 880SQ. Its got a Simmons Signature 4X12X40AO scope in Millett rings.

:) While I have several .22 rifles, the three that are my favorites are:
Rem. 513 T it has a 6-24 Tasco on it for shooting gophers... Use it for little else. Very accurate with about any ammo..
Rem. 521T  it has a 3-9 Simmons...most accurate with CCI MINI MAg.  HP..Use this for gophers and tree squirrel when I get the chance...
Win. 72...My Mother in Law gave us this one when my Father in Law passed away..peep sight and super accurate...don't use it much..

One I wish I would have kept was a Marlin tube feed bolt action in .22 mag. that thing would drive tacks at 60 yards..the most accurate .22 mag. I ever owned...traded it for a better quality rifle that wouldn't keep three shots on a snuff can at 50 yards....STUPID......
