I said on my previous post I would give and ice rescue (extreme self rescue) technique, so here goes.
If you have fallen through the ice and find your self to exhausted or just plain unable to get out of the ice hole.
Lay your wet coat sleeves up on the strongest surrounding ice and let them freeze down.
Of course this doesn't always work if the air temp is to warm.
This is a everything has failed and I can't get out without help move.
As I have told people in classes I've taught
"If you freeze your self to the ice, at least I can find your body without diving"
I do know a trapper and was involved in his rescue, that survived after his sleeves froze to the boat he was pulling across the ice. He fell through the ice and was unable to get into the boat or back on the ice. He was basically just trying to hang onto the boat but froze to it. He was near total unconscious and totally unable to help himself when pulled from the water by Fire Fighters. He was a pretty dead looking shade of blue gray when we put him in the ambulance. Had it not been for a shore side home owner who checked with binoculars after the boat did not move for some time. This fella wouldn't have been expected over due for several hours. Which means he most likely would have died of exposure before found.
Bringing us back to the beginning of every outdoor adventure. Let someone know where your planning to go, when you plan to be back.
If possible don't go alone.
Be Safe Having fun,
Mac
