375 Win versus 444 Marlin
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:37:51 AM »
Considering purchasing a barrel for my Encore for southern Michigan which requires a straight walled cartridge.  Shot could be anywhere from 25-200 yards depending on where I sit.  Looking at the 375 Win or the 444 Marlin with a break.  What kind of recoil am I looking at?  I currently own a 7-08 and consider it a fun gun to shoot.  I don't want to shoot a caliber I dread every time I pull the trigger (my slug gun :) ).  Also since I'm considering a barrel with a break should I purchase a custom barrel with break such as OTT or should I purchase factory barrel and have break put on?

I don't have a .444, but I do have .375Win and 7-08Rem.  The two are pretty close on recoil.  I think the 7-08 is a sharper, quicker whack, where the .375 is a slower, bigger push.  I find neither one punishing and enjoy shooting both.  I also shoot a 45-70 which recoils considerably more than either of the other two.  Now, I've been told several times that a .444 recoils more than 45-70 which would put it well above the 375.  I'm not sure I would put a lotta stock in that since the .444 is usually loaded with lighter bullets( at least the factory loadings are ).  I don't much care for brakes.  My .375 and 7-08 don't have them and I would NOT consider putting one on them.  Two of my 45-70's have e'm and two don't....not sure which ones I like best...probably the non-braked.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  ;)

I had a Marlin 444 lever that I hunted with for years. Recoil was about the same as the 45/70 rifles I have shot. It gets your attention, but absolutely not unmanageable.
I would go with the 444 due to a greater selection of loaded rounds and reloading supplies, especially bullet choices.

If you want a true 200 yard straight wall caliber I would look at the .460 S&W. I think that 200 yards is pushing it in either the 375 win or .444. Maybe the .444 with the new Leverlution ammo from Hornady. Just my .02

Being a fellow Michigan hunter down in the shotgun zone, I sympathize with you.

I all most went to a 375 win. I decided to play around with the 357 max but didn't get out long enough to develop a good load this year. The gun dealer that I frequent uses a 375 and raves about it for deer. That said, I use a 44 mag launching hornady 240 xtp's in the mid teens. It gives me a 13 inch drop at 150yards with a 75 yards zero.
Now that S&W came out with the 460, if it were me, I would take a good look at it. As I under stand it, zeroed at 125 yards it wont shoot above 4 inches at closer ranges and at 200 will drop 4 inches. The BIG plus is you can shoot 45 colt and 454 cartridges out of the same barrel, no modifications needed.

I have a 454 barrel I bought the year before the 460 came out. I  occasionally  use it for deer as well. But have always been content with using 45 colts rather than 454. It shoots great, about 1 to 1 1/2 at 50 yards for 3 shoots using 250 xtp's around 1300 fps. Both the 44mag and 45 barrels have put deer down without them traveling more than 10 yards from point of impact.

Good luck on your decision. You will do well with either the 375 or 444. The 375 may shoot a little flatter than the 444, but they will both work great.

You can plug in the info on hornady's web site to find out which would shoot flatter, under the external ballistics link. You will need to know approx velocity and B.C. of the bullet and the program will give you a bullet drop chart to what ever range you want. Of course all ways verify these, but I have found it very helpful and very close to actual performance. You can find the B.C. of all Hornady's bullets under the bullet look up and the info section of each bullet.

If you order a custom barrel, I would have them put the brake on as well, may say you money in the long run. Just remember these will greatly increase the concussion to you, the shooter. Ear protection will become a MUST for any shooting...

Just to muddy the water a bit.  Have you considered the 405 Winchester?

I replaced my 375 JDJ contender with a 444 encore when Michigan went to straight walls. With the extra weight of the encore and MT, the 444 is more pleasant to shoot compared to contender. I looked at the 375W. Bullet selection is better but brass is difficult to find. Hornaday is coming out with a 44/240 pointed bullet for reloaders that looks promising. The 265 Hornaday has taken a couple whitetails past 200 yds. I have shot the 460 and  45/70. Compared with same weight bullets I think the 444 is easier to shoot.
From your handle I'm guessing your from Myers Lake. I'm from Jenison. Pm with email if you want to talk more.
