Whats the deal?

Whats the deal with all these rifle makers  makeing a lott of there new rifle in this matt black? is it that much cheaper for them than blueing is or is it just the demaned of the hunter so it dont flicker in sun light or whats the deal, and what is this matt black coating a dipped paint or powder coating or what thanks

They use several processes. Winchester used a paint like finish on some cheaper shotguns in the 1300 series. It scratched off badly. Most of the matte finish guns are either bead blasted or sandblasted and blued. This saves a LOT of money as it takes a whale of a lot of time to polish the metal before it can be blued. Time is money! I've never spooked an animal with a shiny gun but that said I do camo my turkey gun? Some of the newer turkey shotguns use a powder coat type material that's applied via submersion in water with the material floating on top. The product is coated completely in all dimensions as it enters the water containing the powder coat floating. The product is then baked to set the coating. These seem tougher than the painted finish.. Any matte blue seems more easily damaged than a polished blued surface as the rough edges protrude and are more easily damaged.. Powder coat as used on many products is extremely durable.
