270 in house, 308 comes in next week
« on: January 24, 2008, 10:57:51 AM »
I got a 270 last week. Going to get it to the range hopefully this weekend. Reloading 130 gr bullets with it. ;D Next week I'll pick up the 308. Oh, sorry, They are both handis. I do have a question about the 308. I've read on a few other boards that the 150 gr bullets sometimes come apart. I thought of reloading 150 gr, but I might have to go to the 165 gr. Any one have any data on this? I felt that the 150 s would be enough for deer, but if I have to worry about the bullet coming apart, then I'll have to get the 165 gr. Need your input you Handi gurus! ;)

I have the .308 bull barrel and have shot about 100 rounds of winchester and federal 150's (don't know about reloads) and haven't had any come apart. You are the first one I have heard say anything about the 150's coming apart. If anone else knows anything about this I would like to know also.

I sold my next door neighbor mine...and between him & his brother they have taken over 40 deer with it...all with 150 grain Winchester power points...All but a couple were 1 shot kills from 50 feet to 350 yards...and it took a couple shots on couple that were running out past 300 yards..It wasn't the ammo's fault neither... >:( Most any cup & core bullet will come apart when shot into heavy bone or at spitting distance...I wouldn't worry too much about it to tell you the truth...If you want a picture perfect bullet mushroom every time..load or buy a bonded or all copper bullet...or even a partition type bullet...

Well, I had a bad experience this past November with Winchester Power Points in the 150 grain loading. I was shooting my Browning A-Bolt in .30/06 (nearly identical ballistics with the .308) and I hit the buck I was shooting at right behind the shoulder.  The doe that had been with him ran a circle and came right back where they'd been standing together and I shot her, too.  I went to find the deer almost immediately and found the buck after a few minutes lying against a tree, looking straight at me.  I walked toward him and he made a growling noise and went to stand up.  That's when I shot him with my Ruger SP101 in .357 magnum to put him down for good.
Then I went after the doe after a half hour of dragging this buck.  I found her further away and still very much alive.  When I walked up to her, she began kicking at me but couldn't get up.  I put the barrel on her forehead and pulled the trigger.  Now, upon skinning these deer I found an entrance hole but no exit hole.  I did not look for the bullets when I field dressed these deer but I was mad because of the poor performance of the bullets. All I can say is that the bullets did not perform as expected.  The shot was 150 yards on these two deer.  On opening day two days prior to shooting these deer,  I shot a doe with a bullet from the same box of ammo and there were two steps taken and down she went.  Exit hole was found.  Maybe the two  bullets I used to shoot the two deer on the third day of the season were just a couple of bad bullets, I don't know but I know the deer I killed in 2006 didn't move much and I used Federal Fusion bullets.  I'll be going back to them.
