tightening Weaver rings and rotating scopes...help!
« on: July 01, 2003, 04:15:00 PM »
Is there some secret to tightening down Weaver brand rings and NOT rotating the scope out of true vertical at the same time? This has been a pain in my arse for quite some time. I can't take any more, HELP!

Going gray quickly,

MAN, I know what you mean! Cant the scope a little expecting it to roll into position, tighten the screws and start over! DON"T cant it and now you have an X in the scope. Usually takes me 2or 3 tries to get it CLOSE. Then I leave it alone or I'll have to buy another.Maybe a gun to go with it

Scrap the weaver rings I wouldnt own them , The crap of trying to guess how much the scope will turn and then offseting the scope the other way so it comes out straight just plain SUCKS.
I use the burris Zee signiture rings , I then use the shims that are availible for them so I use as little of the internal adjustment in the scope so that I stay in the center of the lense were the glass is at its best .

Real simple you tighten each screw a little at a time  so they tighten equally.  If you tighten down just one screw at a time the scope will cant. You want equal pressure on each ring.  You can also dent and torque a scope by not tightening the screws equally with any ring.

Weavers are good rings.  I have mounted a lot scopes in the shop using Weavers.

The Burris rings are good, but I don't think they are aesthetically pleasing to the eye...that's the politically correct way to say I think they are ugly. They  work good and are strong, but that strength comes from the blockiness they have.

My current favorites right now, are the Millet angle locs. One of the first things a Ruger owner should do is toss those dead soft "rings included" in the red bag and Install a set of Millet Angle locs for Rugers.  The "Won't hold a zero problem" will disappear 50% of the time.  Getting rid of the cheap Simmons or Bushnell $39.95 scope will usually solve other 50%.

Yes they are a pain, But I like them enough to put up with a little trouble mounting them. I usually first lap the lower rings, then install a scope and tighten them down to where I want them. That tends to form the upper half into the correct shape. Then I remount the scope with just a little cant since it's still going to turn a little. After you have done a few you will get a better feel for how much cant you need to start with. It will still take a couple of tries to get it right. There are better designs for mounting than the Weaver but I have never had one slip, and I shoot alot of big boomers. I also like the clean apperance of the weavers.  KN

Masking tape in the lower half of the ring.  Very thin strip.  Equal tightening of the screws as you go.  Scope usually won't move.

You CAN do this!!

Steve, I use double sided scotch tape.

I have been following this thread in hopes somebody had the magic solution, I guess it will still be trial and error.

Tough to beat Weaver, strong, simple and cheap.  Anybody want to buy a 3 ring Redfield?

Magic solution, didn't you see the rabbit,  it popped up at least twice.  Tighten screws equally.  One turn on front screw in front ring, one turn on back back screw on back ring, one turn on back screw on front ring, one turn on front screw on back ring repeat until tight, but don't kink the scope. Masking tape helps as does a wrap of brown paper bag.

You spend $500+ on a pistol and a scope and then you Have to save $10 on the rings ?
Sure the weavers work but they are a pain , The burris Zee signiture rings may not be as cosmetically as nice to some people but you dont need to wrap your scope in tape or line hone the rings and the burris arent going to leave a mark and your scope isnt going to move.

I put off buying them because of the price-was I stupid!! They align the scope without any fooling around or honing or ???, and they don't mark the scope. NO MARKS in 3 tries so far. I'll never use anything else. Anybody want to buy some weaver rings cheap?
