Otter Question for Bog
« on: January 25, 2008, 04:30:21 AM »
Tom
I've been playing around under the ice trying to take a couple beavers that did some damage. I've set up with baited under ice 330's which you may know from my other post. Thing is I don't consider baited 330's the best deal. As of 2 checks I've only caught one wayward muskrat. I don't want to keep driving the mileage involved in checking a half dozen sets, So!
Anyway I'm thinking I may have to wait till the cold spell breaks and I have open water to pick these critters off. I'm thinking based on what I see on the ice there is only one old beaver or possibly a young pair? Either way they aren't moving much so they haven't checked out the 330's.
Thing is there are otter at this location which is nice because I do have one tag. Problem is the land owner likes seeing them and ask me to try avoiding them if I could, hence the baited 330's.

So if I go back at ice out and set up the 330 castor mound sets, do you have any tips on avoiding the otters?
I know it's probably not totally possible and if I ding just one it's not a big deal as I have a tag. But for the sake of land owner relations I'd like to do my best to avoid the otters.

Mark, question first on your under ice beaver sets?Is there a feedbed showing? If there is where are your sets?Mike and I have taken several beaver in the last week or so,but we set around the feedbed.
As far as avoiding otter goes, they will come to castor mounds.I usually do not even make otter sets,as I fill my tags at my castor mounds. You may want to go with baited sets in open water.
I started my beaver career with only baited sets,I looked like a tree farmer driving down the road ,with a roof covered by popple limbs.

Tom
I have my baited traps set around the visible feed pile and one blind in a bank hole. I'm set up almost identical to what I was 3 years ago and I took 6 beavers in two checks from this location then. There was definitely activity there before ice up as there are new green tops in the feed pile. I didn't get to look at the place before the ice and snow, but I see no reason the beavers should have moved. The feed pile is not as big as last time so that is why I suspect there are less beavers. I wouldn't care if the traps stayed in till ice out it's just the travel distance from home is a little more than I care for. I've only been going there on Wednesdays and Sunday's. But even going only twice a week it's a bit far for 6 traps.
I guess I forgot about just using the green poplar wood instead of castor to avoid the otters.
Thanks for reminding me of the simple fix.
