Thanks a lot Remington, there goes more $$
« on: January 25, 2008, 10:35:05 AM »
*sigh*

Damn this company for offering me so many toys. While picking up the SPS Varmint black stick of death yesterday, I saw a shotgun I've always wanted but stores never carried it as a regular item, had to be ordered and I'm not one for waiting a couple weeks so I never bothered. There was also the issue of sometimes they'd arrive in Black and NOT the OD green I wanted it in and with my luck...

So there it was, taunting me, an OD Green 870 Tactical Magnum(I don't know if it's got the 18 or 20" but the shell extended looked longer than usual so I'm assuming it's the 20"). I just called and it's still there, I'm paying for half of it tomorrow when we go pick up my friends 7600 and paying the rest in 2 weeks.

I feel like a kid again with these 2 excellent firearms being added to my safe in such a short period of time, I'm bouncing off walls over here  :D

Here are 2 pics I snagged off the net to show what it looks like...

Somehow I know exactly what VLS is talking about.  My story pertains to a Remington VTR.

I went to the local gunshop today for Primers and while I was there I asked if he had any of those 'triangle barreled' Remingtons in.  He said there was one on the shelf.  A .308.  I went over, picked it up for a closer inspection, put it back, came home, took a nap, then called him up and told him to put it away.

Need I say more.

I'm right there too fella's, but this time it's an AK47 clone instead of a Remington.  Showed up at my dealer a couple of days early.  Now I have drive 15 miles to get it.  Oh my....

Wow do we all have issues or what!  :D

so jvs is buying a VTR and 30-06man man wants one as well. You know what that means! The duty falls on jvs to give a range report  ;D

I don't want to see the VTR, I may fall into the same trap. It's not easy living in Remington Country *sigh*

I'm closing my eyes when I walk into Gander to pick up the 870 tac. They had the most beautiful Classic Trap Wingmaster I have ever seen and that could lead to serious checking account or credit card woes. Must keep eyes shut!

I can almost guarantee you one thing...  If you pick one up and look at a VTR, you won't be able to help your self, you WILL go into a Trance.  I got all the way home and took a nap, it was when I woke up in a cold sweat that I realized...  "what were you thinkin' when you put it back on the rack".

For a Synthetic & Triangle, it does have nice lines, which may only be a gimmick, but I am impressed.  That trigger holds big promises too, IMO.

As far as the Range report goes, I probably won't get it out for a test until late summer or early fall.  By then, I will have this website telling me how good or bad they are.

BTW, the gunshop owner told me that local Police Dept's are buying these.

For anyone who cares, the Stock has a Rounded Channel and the Barrel has Rounded Corners.  On the Triangle surface, there are supports molded in the Stock.   And I believe .22-250 is the least made so far.  Remington will not make more .308's until they start another run, if at all.   .223 is the most manufactured.

Hmm so this action/barrel wont fit into another stock(aftermarket like HS) at the moment correct or am I mis-reading? Are the supports upfront applying a pressure point?

I forgot it had the muzzle brake! Just looking at the picture makes me drool, I've done a total 180 on this in the past couple weeks. I'd want it in .308 so again it looks like if I did want this model, I'd be hard pressed in finding one in my fav caliber :(

List is $805? I thought it was around $1,100.00, good grief I have to stop reading your posts  :D What is your dealers price?

NOOO!!! Ill have to put one on order soon if they are no offering any more in 308.  Who told you this? I might have to cancel my Handi Mag Rifle that I have on order. Gunbroker has some for the $700 range.

They would be stupid to stop making them in a .308. Rem has something going for it and then they stop.

.308s in all their varmint/tactical models sell FAST and they take forever to replenish them. It happens every year with the VSF, VLS, SPS Varmint and now the new VTR, I have no doubt jvs speaks the truth. Go back and look at posts I've made over the years here, a lot complain about NOT being able to find varmint/tactical models in .308. Those here who know me well enough will admit to my whining about it, hahaha.

I love .308, what can I say  ;)

* Oh and JVS, I popped in a.308 snapcap and did some trigger pulls. This new trigger is amazing out of the box, on my rifle anyways! I'll have to measure it but I have no doubt it's less than 4lbs and it breaks really clean!

I have never had any problems finding .308's but no one around here really likes Rem. If I can't get one in .308 then I won't have one.

About the Stock.  I think this barrel will fit in another round channel stock, particularly a Varmint Stock, but I'm not sure.  It looked to me like there were 5 areas in the channel where the stock was molded to support the barrel.  4 were about 1/16th inch wide, about 2 inches apart, around the lower two corners of the triangle and the one on the end of the stock was much wider.  The smaller ones appeared to support it at the rounded corners, not the flat, so it is possible other stocks may fit, I don't know.  After only holding it for about 5 minutes, I didn't really have time to pick it apart.

As far as the availability of the .308, I repeated what I heard.  Again, I have nothing else to fall back on but what I was told.  However, the way it was told to me is that there aren't as many .308's as the .223 and no distributor will have more .308's until Remington makes more.  Whatever Remington made is out there NOW.

It looks like Remington started with a heavy Varmint Barrel and machined the Triangle.  Actually it isn't bad looking.

The price I saw is $650 on the .308, and that one now sports a 'sold' sign.

I had something similar to this but I mounted the light to the side of the receiver. A friend of mine had a mount that fitted around the receiver and he welded a Picatinny rail to the side of the mount. I had a Sure Fire tactical light on it. It costed more but it lasted longer than the one that was on the barrel.

Speaking of Remington always trying to take my money, has anyone seen the XCR Tacticals?  I love them both with the green stocks.  Especially the XCR Compact Tactical (an LTR with a green stock it seems).  And the regular one with the stock with the butthook on it.  I can really see both of them in my near future.  The compact for hunting, and the full size for long range/targets.  There goes that tax stimulus check from the government!!!  Let's see, there's me, my wife, and three kids.....might just be enough to make it work.  LOL   ;D (I'm sure that my wife has other plans for it, something to do with Kohls or Macy's, ha ha).

If anyone asks I lost it at the gun store but they gave me something in return.

Took the 870 Tac out today along with the rifles, put her thru the paces. Pic is of my friend Arthur who had just watched me shoot 3 rounds of magnum 00 Buck, so he was a bit apprehensive  :D It was his 1st time out so I let him go at his own pace. Those R3 recoil pads are a nice touch, I appreciate the extra padding when firing off 2 or 3 real quick.
