Range Report 1-26-08
« on: January 26, 2008, 11:46:48 AM »
Nice day at the range today. A little overcast with a slight breeze. Not crowded
at all. The 22 Handi Hornet was dead nuts today!

This is the best 100 yard 3 shot group with it to date. Just for fun I set out a target at 200
yards. It didn't look too good. Out to 125 or so yards though the Hornet is just plain deadly!
The 223 bull Handi is still giving me headache. I am going to try upgrading the scope next.
Right now I am using a 6-24X42mm Trashco. I don't have a lot of confidence in it. It is
pretty fuzzy around the edges when it is turned up past 12 power. If anyone has any
recommendations for a scope I would sure like to hear them. Leuopld, Zeiss, and other
mega $ scopes are out of my league. I am looking at something like a Bushnell, Simmons
or Mueller. In the $200-$250 range.

Don't forget Nikon, for the money I like their quality glass better than Bushnell.

Take a look at this scope. I have one and love it. Its just a very nice scope and I'm thinking about getting another one. I think its one of those rare finds. Just my 2 cents worth. Dave

Bob, here is the other thread on my 223 heavy barrel with APV.

Maybe something in there can help you with your 223.

I would look at the Bushnell 3200 or the Nikon Buckmasters. I would look at Mueller's before the Pro Staff.

Sightron S11 is a nice 200 dollar scope. and the buckmasters are nice also.
The sightron is very clear and is a bit shorter and lighter than the buckmasters but doesn't have fast focus.
Burris  Fullfield 11 is also a nice 200 dollar scope and you can get a rangefinder or a spotting scope or I think a pair of binos
eye relief is a little harder on the fullfield but quiet manageable.  IMHO. I have all of the above and like them all. also all are comparable.

Burris isn't near as good as it used to be. I have a newer model made in the Phillipeans and I compared it to a $50 tasco and the tasco was better.

Thanks for the input guys. I got to thinking. Maybe I don't need a scope
with 24X for the type of shooting that I do. My Hornet shoots pretty
darn good with a 4-12 Bushnell Banner. I'm going to take Tim's advice
and go with the Mueller APV. I have heard nothing but good things
about them. Thanks again guys. This is the best forum anywhere!

Great report Bob

Luv seeing them Hornets shoot'in.

Did you chronograph that load by chance?

Interesting,  when i backed off with the Lil Gun and 40 V Max it started punch'in clovers too  ;)

I have the exact same scope on my Hornet BTW.  Its O.K. for its range/use, especially when Fox hunting.  Still,  I would like a bit more power & clarity for woodchucks, bench now and then.  There is a big jump in quality, contrast, brightness when I use my 4.5-14x42 Burris Fullfield.  I here good things about the Mueller MP.  I dont think they are a Burris but may well be the best value scope going and replace my normal Banners for such in the future.

Thanks Bill. I don't have a chronograph. I need to get one though. It's on my to do list.
This load is the starting load on the Hogdon site. I don't see any reason why I couldn't
drop it a couple of tenths of a grain though. It gets to the target in a hurry the way it
is right now. The 4-12X40mm Banner isn't bad. I will probably upgrade it in the future.
That Brown 97D looks like it would be a great match for the Hornet. I have plans to add
another Handi to the stable soon. I'm looking at a 270 Winchester. That 97D would
be a good scope for it as well. I ordered a Mueller APV last night for my 223 bull Handi.

I just stopped by to share my feeling on the Muellers....I've handled just two of them ...an Eraticator 8.5-25x50 and the Tactical 4-16x50 with the illuminated mildot. I have Pentax Lightseekers,Monarchs, Sightron SII's and S&W along with some lesser brands to compare.  I believe the quality of their Tactical at a touch over $200. rivals that of my other..."better" glass. Tracking is excellent too.

Just my $0.02

I also use the Bushnell Banner Target Scope 6 X 24 on my bull .223. Decent optics for the price. Typical Bushnell quality in regard to glass clarity. Not the best eye relief though, the scope is mounted as far back as it can go and I still feel myself having to unnaturally adjust my cheek mount forward to accommodate the eye slop.

Here's my range report from this morning with the .223 bull barrel.

Winchester 55 grain FMJ's
First four-shot group was awesome. Two inches high, dead on at 100 yards and I could cover them with a quarter.  Second group was the same dead on, but as wide as a 50 cent piece. Next group as big a baseball, and fourth group looked like I shot the target with 00 buckshot. At this point I packed up and went home for coffee!  ???

Tracker 370,
I'm in the same boat Brother. Several times I thought I had my 223 bull
figured out with the right kind of powder and bullet combination and the
next trip to the range it throws me a screw ball the next trip out.

all the reports of shotgun patterns make me think your optics are loose.

Ken,
That is what I am thinking. I just put a set of Burris Signature Zee rings on.
The scope is the next weak link in the chain IMHO. The new Mueller APV
should take care of that part of the puzzle.

Tim turned me on to the Brown 97D, it is made by Mueller. I bought the 4-12 and it is bright and clear as any i've looked through. They had then for $139.00 at the time, that was
60-90 days back.

I thought the optics were off also, but everything is torqued down right. I've been shooting the gun long enough now to know that it's only good for about ten shots out of a good clean barrel. Then everything goes to hell. I'm going to get in the habit of running a cleaning patch down the barrel every third group.

Thanks for the heads up on Mueller, I've never looked at one before but I'll definitely take a look now!
