"What is it? Where is it?" Tie-breaker Photo on Mon. Night
« on: January 26, 2008, 02:16:33 PM »
The second, (just for fun!)  “What is it?  Where is it?” contest. Tie-breaker Photo on Mon. Night

The last time we did this, about five months ago, all who participated had a lot of fun and learned a few things too, not from us, but from their fellow GBO Cannon and Mortar board members.  Most, but not all, of these cannon were seen by Mike and I on our 2007 research trip through New York and the New England states.  After four years of covering the southern states and the seacoast forts that abound there, we felt a little guilty for ignoring the northeast.  Double D was declared the “Cannon Hunter Extraordinaire” for solving all of them, last time.  Now, we have lots of new members and also lots of very sharp longer-term members, so, who knows?

Please remember, this is just for fun; every answer will be treated with respect and nobody takes any of this seriously, at all.  So, even if you can locate just one or two, that will be appreciated by all, just like last time.

The answer should contain the common name, model # or description, or name/date of the cannon pictured AND the cannon’s location, (fort name, town, museum or city, AND state).

Mike and I will post a listing of only those member-posted answers which are correct for three nights and then award the “Cannon Hunter Extraordinaire” title to the member who contributed the largest number of correct answers.

Last year’s winner, Double D, gave a valuable resource up when he said, “Google is my friend.”  We say, artillery books, vacation trips, atlas maps, etc., etc. are all beneficial.

Good luck!!

Mike and Tracy

1.  On our trip we followed Route 2 through Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
The sign reads: Route 2 Diner.  The name on the green delivery van is: Naples
     Packing Co., Inc.

2.  Captured from the H.M.S. Detroit.  Sorry, the location is not Ft. Niagara.
Battle of Lake Erie. American victory in 1813.  Prize cannon from Brit. flagship.

3.  One of the  “Hudson River School”  painters who painted that mountain in the distance
was F.A. Silva, "A View of Storm King (Mtn.) On The Hudson".
The photo was taken at 10:30 A.M. in early April of 2004.

4.  This ain’t Brooklyn!

5.  Hint:  1862, 1917(RR gun carriage seen thru hole), and 1946.  Name the 1862 rifles
pictured.  Cannonmn, please restrain yourself!  Oops, another clue given!  General
Jubal Early challenged this city in 1864.

6.  The largest gun being fired on a regular basis in the United States today.
Small state-big gun.  water, water everywhere.

7.  From the breech to the reach, this photo displays a cannon located in one of the most
famous batteries in the history of  The War Between the States.  The first U.S. Marine,
Medal of Honor was won under the guns of this elevated battery. Name the gun, the
Battery(either name will do), the river and the state.

8.  There are four of these 100 Pdr. Parrott rifles within about 60 miles of Lake George,
NY.  They are in Bristol, VT, Whitehall, NY, Fairhaven, VT, and Dresden, NY.  The
gun pictured is on the west side of a very steep hill, almost a cliff, at the end of a very
narrow, goat-path like, little road within the town limits.  Where is it located?  The one
in Dresden, NY is actually in a guy's backyard and he does not have a cliff dwelling.

If you don't know the exact bore size, don't worry about it.  General descriptions of gun type and model are ACCEPTABLE.

Good luck.  Have fun!

Mike and Tracy

Lance,   quit blubbering and give me an answer to no. 7!  It is so close, that you could almost include it in your farm chore list.  In the west, when we say close, we mean within 200 miles on the shortest surface route.  No more negativity, or I will move your absolutely fantastic little bronze mortar with the green bed out of the number one slot to be re-created when I retire!!  So there.

Kabar2,   Yes we do.  It is approximately 70 yards north of the Fort Hamilton main gate in Brooklyn, NY.  We studied that big one in 2004.  You are 50% correct on that 1890, 3.2" rifle.  Good going!!  You're getting the hang of it.  I actually had forgotten which state we took the picture in; I waited too long before reviewing the 1,046 photos we took, so I had to prove out a method to find the location, myself!  All I can say is, Double D has a good friend in Google. Important clues are contained in that photo caption.  Great start; keep it up!

Well, i don't feel so stressed out, knowing i only have to answer one of them. let's try this: no.7, Fort Darling at Drewrys Bluff on the James River in Va., during the May 1862 brawl, John F. Mackie corporal on the U.S.S. Galena, recieved the First Marine Medal of Honor............... darn, i forgot to mention that it's a COLUMBIAD, also the Union soldiers called it Ft. Darling, the Confederates Drewry's Bluff.

Lance,   We knew you knew that one.  This battery, also called Fort Darling by some, was a case history of how devastating, accurate plunging fire could be against thinly armored vessels like the USS Galena which actually predated the USS Monitor as the first ironclad afloat in this country.  Curiously, the original Monitor was also there, but could not elevate her 11" Dahlgren shell guns high enough to hit the battery.  By the way, what would you call that large, rough-surfaced gun in the photo?  The exact bore size is NOT necessary.   No. 7  is 2/3 solved with Lance's answer.

Thanks Lance!

Alright # 6 I believe is an 8" Columbiad  by the looks of it a model 1857,
its too far off to get good detail. now as to where it is I'm working on that  ;D

Lance good call on # 7 I thought it was along the James river just hadn't placed it yet.

Allen,   So far, so good, actually Model 1844, but model year is NOT necessary.  Now you are confronted with that old real-estate saying, "Location, location, location".  See new clues just posted.

Lance,   you better go and ride the horse that didn't eat too much around the pasture and give someone else a chance; you guys are becoming unstoppable.  Would it be too persnickety of
us to ask, where in DC are these Brooke naval guns, U.S. Navy 14" RR Gun and the large slab of Japanese Battleship Yamato armor with the 16" hole through it, located??

Most grateful,

Thank you, KABAR2, you are correct!  An excellent fort with a fantastic staff and an Original 1844, 8" Columbiad cast in 1855, noted on a trunnion end.  Visit this place if you get a chance.  It's a nice ferryboat ride over there from Delaware City too.

Ok  Tracy and Mike and Lance I will take a stab at # 2 I may be wrong ........ is this the Erie Maritime Museum?  home of the US Brig Niagara.

and I would say that is a 24 pounder, although it's hard to gage with out seeing the bore.

And Lance I tried to enlarge the discription on the H.M.S. Detroit but could not enhance it enough with my limited software.

Oh did you know there is a recreation of the H.M.S. Detroit also.....

Lance,  What is says, beyond what I already mentioned is this:  "Since it lacks British markings, the gun was likely U.S. made and captured by the British at Fort Detroit and then taken to Fort Malden, Ontario.  The guns were then removed from Fort Malden and taken to arm Barclay's Squadron.  O.K., it's a British pattern long gun.  What pattern is it?

KABAR2, that's it!  Do you know the pattern by any chance?  DD has one in South Africa of this same pattern and also there is one at Old Fort Niagara of this same common naval pattern.
That museum name is not an easy one; good work.

Lance, yes we did.  You are proving to be a tough competitor against the new guy though.  WE pretty much knew that the last one would be a......Beeaaach!!  Use your geography tools in one of the mapping engines.  Both of the really big ones were cast in Pittsburg, PA.  Does that help?

T&M
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!
