I think we are beatin' on the same bush. I thought I found it, however it's not quite the same. I guess there are more than one..... But, it came from the H.M.S Detroit.

intoodeep, Where did you find that one? Actually, despite the water effects upon the metal, it does look like the same pattern. You cannot see the breeching ring in our photo.

#8 is either Whitehall, NY or Fairhaven, VT. It's not Dresden, NY as M&T stated. And it's not Bristol, VT as seen below.

Lance, You are right! Thank you so much. We thought it would take days for someone to get that one!

I believe you and KABAR2 are tied with 3 each now and intoodeep has one. Sometimes the sites which describe one or the other of those really big ones mention where they now are mounted. They are only about 9 miles apart! Different states.

intoodeep, you are right, it is one of those two; Lance is correct also it is Whitehall, NY and no proof of method was ever required; I was just curious, that's all. I think I know what happened at the Erie Maritime Museum. Its the same tube shown in two different mountings, because BOTH have immersion damage. You photo was taken before they had a carriage built for that tube.

Lance, it's a Rodman, but not #4 and not at bay bridge. The other one, actually #1 Registry no. is by a bridge, The Narrows Bridge, adjacent to Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, NY.

intoodeep, I thought that Knox trail crossed over further south than Whitehall, NY. Just a guess; we need a good historical map to determine that. WHERE is that huge Rodman??? NOT NY!., but only 9 miles from Fort Hamilton!!

Excellent, intoodeep!! Yes, finally. That one was tough. Thank you. Used as a testing ground for years and years, there are lots of carriage mounting pads, mostly concrete still there and a very interesting Steam-powered disappearing gun battery, Battery Potter, a huge experimental thing, never again repeated. Lots of 1890, 12" mortar pits are there too.
In theory, if the 20 incher at Hamilton and the one at Hancock were both fired at each other, that there is a very small chance that given max range by 200 lb charges that the huge, 1080 lb. cored shot could actually impact each other at about 4.5 miles range. You would win the biggest lottery far sooner than you would ever see this though.

Lance has left us. Two way tie with Mr. intoodeep catching up fast!

So the cannon display has been replaced in Washington Navy Yard? The last thing I saw from the yard implied that the cannons had been removed along with the missiles.

George, All we can tell you is that the large U.S. Navy collection of cannon was located at the Washington Navy Yard when Mike and I visited in 2004 in three major areas: Luetze Park (Bronze Guns), in front of Admiral Dahlgren's Headquarters (mainly Brooke guns from the CSS Tennessee), and in front of the Navy Museum (variety of seacoast and naval guns). Also there are cannon here and there all over the grounds. The most recent Fodors description of the Navy Yard still mentions "cannons and missiles in front of the museum", however, anyone would be foolish to visit here without calling first. In fact, U.S. Navy instructions for visitors mention calling at least one week in advance of your proposed visit due to increased security. We did this in 2004 and had no difficulty entering or finding a parking spot in front of the museum. Call them for up-to-date info. BEFORE you go there. (202-433-4882)

CONGRATULATIONS!!! You won the title of "Cannon Hunter/Builder Extraordinaire". Good show, Lance; we kept waiting for you to show up, but you were lurking; you are one of those guys who always beat me on the Ebay auctions. Wait until the last 3 seconds, an snipe!! Great show.

O.K., I guess we should have waited a little more, but Mike and I are working so late these days, I figured I better post it before my fanny got glued to the chair. Jointing quite a bit of white oak these days and fretting over a not-so-perfect planer too. As to exactly what you won, well..............errrr, praise, admiration, accolades. Isn't that quite a lot?

intoodeep, The Knox trail goes south on a Lake George route to Albany, then over to MA via Route 20, so it misses Whitehall, NY. I'm pretty sure the route goes within 3 mi. of Rickk's house!

KABAR2, The Blomefield pattern was the British naval gun pattern that the Americans copied to cast that 24 Pdr. long gun.

AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I was asleep at the switch, the last post I saw was from M&T from this morning........
That one was too easy
I've been past that castle many times in fact I was a good customer of Bannerman's until they closed
shop in their last store on long island in Blue Point.
In 1967 I was 7years old and buying Span Am 38 cal holsters and 45-70 McCeever box's for 50 cents a peice!
they gave the island to the State of NY in the late 1960's and the store in Blue Point was emptied and sold in 1973,
the remains of their stock resides in a barn.
some interesting tidbits about the island,
Navy Arms founder Val Forgett was contracted to disarm the island of ammunition and artillery shells left there from its hay-day.
during its life the Castle was built with cement seized in an arms smuggling shipment by the government at auction,
Bannerman's bought the both the arms and the cement,
old gun barrels, ramrods etc. were used as rebar in the construction,
the magazine had a fire and blew up spewing cartridges and hotchkiss shell around a portion of the island.
West point Gunnery had the island marked as a target if there was ever an invasion.
Unfortunately I don't have allot of info on the island.....

KABAR2, Sounds like you know a lot more about this island arsenal than I do. The only thing I can add was that a Kingston City cop and I rowed over there in a little 10' rowboat in 1972 and we started below the island so the Hudson River current was quite a challenge to overcome. We finally got there and looked and looked, but only found a few Buffington rear sights for the Trapdoor Springfield rifles, all rusty, of course. It was interesting, but you really have to watch your step there. Surrounded by water as you are, snakes are common. We used to go out and hunt rattlesnakes and copperheads for my friend's uncle who milked them for a local university.

Also, as the story goes, the late Val Forgett, as he was leaving the island all loaded down with munitions, spotted two enormous 14" Naval Gun shells from WWI flanking the end of the pier, so he turned around and went back to tip both of them over and into the Hudson River mud, probably about 20 feet deep there in the lee of the current.

I Know a bit about Bannerman's Because I knew the last owner who started working there after WW II . He lost an arm to a mine
that destroyed his jeep.
His Daughter was in my class in school, and a Friend of mine worked there while going to college in the
early 1960's, I also know the man who stores the remaining Bannerman stock in trade, (nothing really good left)
As a 7 Year old boy walking in to this old well weathered building down by the beach, in Blue Point for the first time had been
a wondrous thing! the first thing I saw was a 58 caliber Gatling gun on its field carriage, glass front display cases formed a "U"
each containing treasures, Lyle guns and cannon barrels including gas pipe guns from the Philippines along the base of the "U" several large cardboard box's containing
holsters and McCeever box's, nail barrels full of 45-70 bayonets cut down for cadets. the walls were covered in ancient peg board yellowed by the sun
coming through the high narrow windows and coverd with muskets, rifles & accoutraments of past wars. You never forgot the smell......
it was the smell of ancient leather and canvas mixed together with dust.....
I spent hours going through a well worn Bannerman's catalog reading everything in it. (the other was a Dixie gun works catalog)
Bannerman's while growing up I guess had an effect on my life, and my love of history. I attended Trinidad State Jr College in Colorado
and received a degree in Gunsmithing, When I returned to NY I ended up in the antique gun parts business as I bought up Trapdoor Springfield
parts, percussion Springfield,Krag & tower pistol parts in quantity, I was doing quite a bit of antique gun restoration for people, I then had two opportunities
to purchase large quantities of antique gun parts from estates, one a parts dealer, and the other a man who restored flintlock muskets rifles and pistols,
many of these parts came from Bannerman's, Some of the younger members who deal with Dixie Gun Works may not know Turner Kirkland bought
most of the antique gun parts in the catalog from Bannerman's back in the 50's 60's & 70's. in fact anyone who has quantities of antique US military parts
probably got them from Bannerman's Their legacy will live on in collections and suppliers for years to come. Some day if time permits I have some stories
about the NYC store that some may find interesting, Oh and one last tid-bit Bannerman would use a small coehorn mortar to announce his arrival to the watchman
on the Island, he would row across and pick him up, my introduction to artillery was lighting off a charge at 14years old from that very mortar!
