22 Hornet Questions

  Hey All...

    .22 Hornet with the 10" or 12" barrel - anyone regularly using this rig for varmints ?

    What kind of accuracy should be expected from the Hornet with the 10" or 12" barrels ?

    What effective range should be expected of the Hornet from those barrels - assuming we're after mostly woodchucks and coyotes ?

    Anyone have any experience with the .22 Hornet "V-max" ammo ?

   Anyone have a favorite factory load for the Hornet in those barrel lengths ?

   Any Hornet reloaders have a favorite powder and/or bullet for varmints ?

   All experiences/information/opinions welcome !

never used the hornet in a t/c, i do however have 2 rifles in .22 hornet. i use 13.0 grains of hodgdon lil gun and a 40 gr v-max for hunting. beats any factory ammo hands down in all respects, accuracy, velocity, energy, etc. with the rifles my personal max range i limit for coyotes is 200 yards. woodchucks ill shoot to 400. with a handgun id probably shorten either of those up a bit. i wouldnt mind a hornet barrel for my contender but havent picked one up yet. most t/c barrels are very accurate so id think that the hornet shouldnt be any different.

You should ask about the Hornet/Contender on the pistol silhouette forum, even though we limit our testing to 100 yds as that is the longest range we shoot at I'm sure some have "played" on targets out to 200 M.
The Contenders long throat doesn't lend itself well to the 40 & 45 gn. bullets, but rather the 50 th 55 gn. bullets shoot the best, Mine will shoot into 1" @ 100 yds with 52/53 match bullets and just over 1" with 55 gn. FB bullets. Now I don't drive mine very fast, 1700 fps or so.

Had good luck on prairie dogs out to 200 with my 14 in. Hornet with 40gr v-max and lil-gun.
It shoots under an inch at 100 yds.  Haven't shot paper past there.
