will I get a free barrel ?
« on: January 27, 2008, 05:41:48 AM »
I talked with Bill in the custom shop , I have a barrel in 22 hornet that shot fantastic . After about 6000 rounds the accuracey begain to drop off , At 8000 rounds i retired the barrel . Bill suggested I send it in , if the accuracy is out of spec (what ever that is) I get a new barrel.

If your round count is accurate, I'd wager something else is amiss as the .22 Hornet is rather easy on barrels. You could simply have a buildup of copper that is immune to standard cleaning procedures. Or there could be a problem with the scope/base/rings, etc.

As to accuracy being "out of spec," don't expect a new barrel. TC does not, nor have they ever, guaranteed accuracy as do some custom makers.

Not to try and start a pissing contest but I suggest you call Thompson and discuss the subject accuracy with the proper people . As far as the copper  goes , I have cleaned the barrel properly and it is not copper build up . This barrel was pretty difficult to find the load it liked and when I retired this barrel its pet load would produce 1 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards , Not bad for a hornet but about twice what it would once do . With the factory ammo they are likey to test with they will be lucky to get 3 inch groups .

I am well-versed and intimately familiar with the procedures of the custom shop, so I doubt there's any need to "call" them.  After all, there is a legal difference between a barrel that is either in or out of spec and expressing an actual accuracy guarantee.

But if you are certain that your barrel is shot out, do you really anticipate or expect that Thompson-Center will replace your barrel?

That's akin to driving a car for 200,000 miles and then hoping the dealership will give you a new one.

Yes, they may do so. But if it would be on my dime, I would not give someone a new barrel after they shot it out.

Let us know what happens.  I also would be amazed if you got a free barrel if yours is indeed shot out.  That is above and beyond the call.

Look at it this way: we should all be so lucky to shoot enough to wear out our guns.

A friend shot out a muzzle loading barrel on his T/C.  They did in fact replace the barrel.  Great company.

I was told by T/C they would replace my barrels if I shot them out. I specifically asked that question, and made sure they understood what I was asking. I guess they hope not too many will shoot a single shot that much.

Yes they will surprisingly replace a shot out barrel , I two asked that exact question . They will also replace a frame that is worn out , They just did it for a Friend of mine . His was a very early contender frame and they gave him a brand new G2 , he had to do the DROS though

Don't know about the barrels for their modern ML's.    But FWIW, their traditional ML's have always had very shallow grooves that can be shot into smooth bores with a lot of use shooting hard lead alloy maxi balls or hard lead alloy PRB's without enough patch thickness in them.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

The modern ML barrel's have deep grooves and good rifling. It could be shot into a smooth bore but it would take many many thousands of rounds.
