Scoping a Ruger Super Blackhawk
« on: January 28, 2008, 02:31:43 AM »
Hello,,,

I have a 7.5" Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag.  I wish to scope it.  My gunsmith says he can mount a base on it by drilling and tapping the top strap.  He says this is common and that he has done it many times before.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this and if this is a reliable, strong method.

Does anyone have any pictures?

Thanks

Greg

I have a "B Square" mount that fits on my .44mag super black hawk. You have to remove the rear sight and a screw/bolt locks the mount in.It also has a yoke that fits around the barrel to help hold the mount down. I have used it with some fairly heavy handloads with out a problem. I have taken quite a few ground hogs and a couple deer with this setup.

The most secure way to scope a SBH is to drill and tap the top strap, unless of course it is a "Hunter" version which is furnished with Ruger rings, etc. SSK also makes an excellent set-up, the T'SOB, and will mount it for you.

I drilled and tapped the top stap on my new model Blackhawk 41Mag myself but unless you are fairly handy at this kind of stuff I'd recommend having it done professionally.  I installed a Weigand weaver style mount on it and it is rock solid.  I had first used a B-Square clamp on mount and every time I wanted to shoot I'd have to reset the scope to put it back on target.  You can see the Weigand mounts at    www.jackweigand.com

Use a Leupold base atatched (drilled & tapped) to the topstrap and use redfield rings on my .41 BH.  Rock solid.
I sue Weigand's rings on other stuff and they are great stuff!

I agree that Weigand's mount is also excellent.
