While reading Aardvarks post on his Siamese Mauser I got thinking about my old one.

Mentioned it to one of my pards and a couple of days later I was shown this and asked if I wanted to stock it.



It is a Siamese Mauser reworked and rebarreled by Shaw in the early 70's!  He ordered it and never did anything with it!

He also got a Fajen stock for it.



I will take the project but as I told him, it's not going to happen for a while.  He figures he has waited 30 years already, what's a couple more.

I will post updates and photos as they become available.

Wish me luck, it will be my first bolt rifle in about 20 years.

Since I last wrote about this M98, it has become mine.

Okay, on this Siamese, Shaw replaced the military safety with some sort of commercial safety.

I am very used to dissembling a bolt with a military safety but have no, zero, zipp, clue how to take this beast apart.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Since I am asking, anybody know if the old military safety from a M98 can be installed?

The only other thing I don't like is the magazine follower was beveled to allow the bolt to close on an empty magazine.  Not a feature I like but easily taken care of with a spot of weld.

Any info on the safety will be greatly appreciated.

Strawhat:  that safety may be nothing more than a low mount safety that was used for a Mauser that was to be scoped.  All that safety does is prevent the firing pin from going forward.  The bolt looks like it should disassemble the same as any other 98 - remove the bolt from the action; depress the small plunger opposite the bolt handle and unscrew the firing pin and spring from the bolt body; place the tip of the firing pin on a small piece of wood and using the bolt block (fat round part) push down on the firing spring to compress it, and rotate the safety to one side or the other and remove it to the rear - this will free up the firing pin block and the firing pin spring. 

If the trigger is stock and has not been replaced by a aftermarket trigger then any ol safety from any ol 98 can replace it, just reverse the process.

If you wish, you can simply replace the magazine follower with a stock magazine follower that will make the bolt remain open after the last round. If you do that, please send me the other one..........  HTH.  Mikey.
