Hammer extensions
« on: January 28, 2008, 12:56:48 PM »
Hey Everyone, I have seen on a few other threads that it doesn't seem that people are in favor of using hammer extensions. I've got one on my contender, without it I wouldn't be able to cock it with my gloves on and here in MI there is rarely a day during firearm season that you can go without gloves. Is there a specific reason to not use one ? Everyone jump in lets hear what you have to say.

Thanks Jeff

I have one on one of my Contenders and have never had any problems.  Often people having misfires find the problem goes away when they remove the extension.  My other Contenders have high enough rings so I can cock them without extensions.

Lately I have heard of more Encore users having this problem, but years ago prior to Encores plenty of Contender users had misfires from extensions too.

It simply boils down to a matter of spring strength versus the additional mass of the hammer extension.

The extensions are extremely useful. If you want to assure proper functioning and no misfires, the best route to take is an aftermarket spring or spring kit. They are easy to install and will allow you to shoot with confidence and not having to worry about a misfire at the least opportune moment.

Also, a couple of custom makers offer high-quality extensions -- and for little more money than the conventional one-size-fits-all arrangement.

I've been hunting with ans shooting Contenders for the past 15 years.  One of the first additions was the hammer extension.  If you are not experiencing any problems keep on trucking.

I should have specified that only one of my Contenders over the years gave frequent misfires due to the addition of a hammer extension.  Other shooters haven't been as fortunate.

A number of my Encores, however, have suffered from this problem.

Nonetheless, it is a simple fix.

I have extensions on a contender and an encore, no problems with either.....However...I sent the contender frame into T/C for work on the "rimfire"  pin. I had removed the hammer extension before sending it back.   They did fix it, and under warranty , but sent a note back with the frame.  Can't quote it, but it basically said :  We see evidence of a hammer extension has been in use on this frame, T/C does not recommend using, may void the warranty.   Take it for what its worth ???   Now for $75 , you can send your Encore frame to them and they will install a " swing hammer ", guess these are on the newer Encore frames.  May be food for thought !  Good shooting

I tried one on my Encore and about every other shot was a misfire . I removed it and haven't had one since.( or before I put the extension on) Shortly after that I was at the local range and a guy there was having misfires with his encore. I noticed he also had a hammer extension on his and I told him about the problem I had with mine, as I was leaving I noticed he was removing his. Since then I just go with extra high rings and have had no problem getting to the hammer even with gloves on. Its usually too cold here in Iowa during deer season to go without gloves too, this year it was a balmy 9 deg. opening morning. I would say that if yours is working  don't mess with it, if not get some taller rings.                                Dan

On the Encore is the Pro version of the swing hammer available as a replacement?

TC will convert your Encore frame to the swing hammer for $69.95 when you send it in.

But, be aware: If you have had any custom work done i.e.; a trigger job etc., your firearm will be sent back to you at factory specifications; however we will return your customized components.

what ever one said is true up to a point. if you are going to use an extension MAKE sure it is an aluminum one ans not a steel on I had one and it miss fired and i put in the heavier springs . worked great for a while then i started having trouble . my hammer was bent ever so slightly from the added weight . several dollars later t/c installed a new hammer.
now i get the tall rings and on my encore i sent it back and had the swing hammer installed
 good luck

Thanks Guys, I wasn't aware of the problem. I thought that maybe the T/C purists didn't like them because they are not original equipment. But that's OK, too each his own!

Thanks   Jeff

All my T/C's have the hammer extensions. I have never had a problem with firing. What prompted me to put them on was an accidental discharge after not taking a shot at a deer. It was 15 degrees out, I was cold and my thumb slipped off causing the gun to fire. That's when I decided all my t/c's would have the hammer extensions.

They work like a charm. They are well-made -- a good, quality product.

I've had one on my G2 Contender and never had any issue.  Of my 3 Encores only one had issues with the extension.  I had an ambi extension and switched it to a single sided Stratton extension and no more problems.  Personally, I'd have a hard time without the extensions.

I want to second the aluminum extension comment as better than steel.  The extra mass probably won't cause mis-fires, but steel is hard on the Encore hammer (old style contenders are probably fine)
