Ruger M77 HawkeyeŽ All-Weather HKM77RFP
« on: January 28, 2008, 08:40:47 PM »
Hi i live in Australia and im very new to this forum and i just bought a Ruger M77 HawkeyeŽ All-Weather HKM77RFP CAL: .243 and i would like to know whats the best scopes for under 150USD to put on this rifle.
+ if anyone has any recommendations on whats the best factory ammo to use, stuff that shoots nice and flat from 0-300yards and if you have any loading data for the .243 for reloading.  any help would be great as I'm new to all this.

g'day cobraa, lol.nice choice for a rifle, what are you doin shootin roos with it?i was under the impression that firearms were restricted in Australia.anyway,as far as scope choices i would say the best bang for the buck would be a Nikon prostaff,Leupold rifleman, burris fullfeild 2.that would be my choices,i have a bunch of the nikons,2-7 compact i like them for deer rifles,we seldom shoot over 100 yds here,i have a half dozen or so Leupold's in different configurations all top quality but the rifleman series would be closer to the $ you want to spend.i have recently purchased a couple burris fullfeild 2,i am very happy with them, maybe a few $ more than what you want to spend.i guess it depends on your magnification needs.
sorry i cant help you on the ammo i only shoot handloaded rifle ammo and don;t load for the 243.good luck with your hawkeye,i think you'll be impressed,i have one in 358 win.with a burris 3-9 ff2,will do sub moa at 100 yds.only mod was to float the barrel.later adker

if i had to shoot factory ammo i would probably use Hornady.they make a light mag 243 in 85,90,100 grn with the sst bullet.the light mag is intended fro bolt or single shot actions only, hornady claims 200 fps over their standard ammo.i use the v-max bullet which is very similar,in my 22-250 i have taken everything from crows to coyotes and up to 200 lb whitetails.i would expext dingos and roos would be a very good comparison.out of that 24" barrel on your hawkeye you should get real good velocity.just my 2cents,good luck, adker

I thought you guys were not allowed to own repeating fire arms?  Is your Ruger a single shot?
I would look at a Weaver Scopes.  the 3-9X38mm is a little more than the $150 you requested but not too much more.  I think the Weaver scopes are every bit as good as Leupold optics in the same class with a price tag 60 to 80% the price.  I own a couple of Weaver scopes and a Leupold 3-9X40 VarX 2's and can not tell the diff when looking at a target.  The Leupold was about $300+
I was looking at the same rifle yesterday in my friends shop and the same scope.  The matte black scope works well on the rifle.  You are never going to find a scope that will match the sliver/ grey of the rifle. And the Shop I was looking in had it on the shelf for $204.  But I'm in CA and you may be able to find it cheaper on line somewhere.
As to what ammo.  ????? who knows what your rifle will like.  I would guess 80 grain soft points for general use.  maybe 100 grains for Deer sized animals.  As far as reloading goes the sky is the limit and you can load the 243 to and from.
What do you plan to shoot or hunt with it?

I believe you. I just thought you all passed a law a few years back that you were not allowed to have repeating firearms after there was a school shooting.
I remember the log lines of people turning in their long guns in Australia and we were hoping that they would land on these shores.

yeah we are not allowed to have semi auto's (repeater) but we can own a single shot rifle that takes a magazine. cause ya have to open the bolt to eject the shell before another will load so thats not classed as a repeater.

yeah it was a guy in Tasmania that went on a shooting spree. and the guy was not a licensed shooters, the government was only looking for an excuse to disarm the civilian population. and getting a shooters licence now is alot of hassle. and quite a few $$. i know i just went through it.
Tasmania is an Australian island and state of the same name. It is located 240 kilometres (150 mi) south of the eastern side of the continent, being separated from it by Bass Strait. The state of Tasmania includes the island of Tasmania, and other surrounding islands. Tasmania has an estimated population of 493,300 as of June 2007[2] and an area of 68,401 square kilometres (26,410 sq mi).

Thanks for the info.
Also thanks for the metric conversions.  I have no idea how far 240 Km would be other wise.  Kilometers are just some red numbers on the inside of my speedometer.

I'd go with the Federal Premium 85gr HPBT...When I was over there in the mid-80s, the kangeroos I saw were smaller than whitetails and I have killed 35 or so of our eastern whitetails with it...Sight in 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards and you will be about 2 1/2 low at 300 yards...

After that, it just depends on what the rifle likes, I've killed more with the 100 gr Remington CoreLokts (85 or so), but most any factory loading that is proper for whitetails should work....Good Luck...

Hi has anyone ever had any problems with eye relief on a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 with Ballistic Plex reticle #200169 on a the Ruger M77 HawkeyeŽ All-Weather HKM77RFP .243   mate and i sighted in me  Ruger M77 HawkeyeŽ All-Weather HKM77RFP .243  yesterday and with the scope sat back as far as it can on the ruger rings it still was short some eye relief at 9X..  when ya grab the gun put it straight up to ya shoulder and go and look at the scope ya should see the full view of the scope but ya don't i have to move me head and eye at least another 1"+ closer to the scope to get full eye relief and it ends up being an unnatural way of shooting..  anyone Else had this problem ?

Just the nature of the beast.

If you want a scope with 4" constant eye relief---look at the Ziess Conquest 3x9x40.

Cobraa,
I think your next options, since you already have the fullfield 2 is a set of extension rings.
Burris did make a zee extension ring for Rugers.
I have a set on my light weight 223 with a fullfield 2 and it works for me.

cobraa ...

I have a Ruger .243 All weather (not a Hawkeye) that I have been hunting coyotes with for over 5 years now. For factory ammo, mine shot the Federal 70gr ballistic tips unbelievably well. I am a re-loader so I just had to find my own recipe. I have settled on Sierra's 85gr HPBT bullet with Varget powder. I do not have access to all of my re-loading records right now but this combination of bullet/powder shoots sub-moa in my rifle.

As far as scopes go, I have a Sightron on mine but I have been buying mostly Bushnell scopes the past few years. I really like the Bushnell 3200 Elites and think you get a lot for the money. I am sure the Burris scopes are good too as many here like them. Good luck and good shooting to you. Please post some pictures if you can of your rifle and the areas you hunt. I think it would be pretty cool to see.

after Allan (VKk4ALE) and i sighted the riffle in using 3 different brands of 95grain ammo we decided that the Federal Premium Vital-Shok 95gr Nosler Ballistic Tip gave the tightest/smallest groups .50MOA or better . so ill be using them until i get enough brass to do some reloading.  so if anyone has any good reloading info please let me know

So have you taken anything with it yet??  Pics please

You can get everything for reloading from Midway USA----good company and I buy quite a bit of stuff from them.

You can get load data just by seaching the web----there are tons of sites out there----both corporate and private.

So does anyone know if Ruger make factory S/S extender rings  I think that's what ya call them for theRuger M77 HawkeyeŽ All-Weather HKM77RFP to bring the scope farther back.?
