500yd 22-250 load??
« on: January 30, 2008, 03:57:46 AM »
Just getting into this and have posted a few questions here already.  Have followed the advice here and managed to work up a very good load with 52 gr. a-max and varget powder.  i should have asked this question earlier but most of the shooting we do is at 500yds.  Have not had a chance to get to our long range so i don't know what these will do there.  Just wondering if any of you have suggestions for some long range loads in this caliber.  thanks.

Windage, elevation, wind flags, and, in my case, lotsa luck.  ;D
Do you have a Chrony?  If you're driving those bullets 3400-3600 fps, it's just a matter of practice, practice, practice.

For long range work the Sierra 52gr. HPBT Match bullet works best in my rifles, both 22-250 and the Swift.  The Powder charge for my guns would likely do you no good at all though.  The heavier slugs uaually work better at long range but you need a faster twist than I have to make that happen.

In a standard twist 22-250 your 52 gr. Amax bullet will shoot with the best of them. its my first choice in my 1-12 twist 22-250 AI.

My gun is a Remington 70 VSSF.  I think the twist is 1 in 14.  Have been shooting 500 yrds for about five years now and have the drill down pretty good.  We do use wind flags and have good balistic charts and scopes.  Everyone in our group is shooting factory ammo.  I have been using Hornady V-Max 50 gr. with good results.  On calm days we have 500 yd egg shoots.  I'm the first in my group to hand load and just looking for an edge.  Don't have Chrony yet but it's on my list.  I am estimating that my velocity is 3650-3675 range.  Looks like a 52 gr. with my twist may be ok.

Old Syko.  What kind of powder are you using with the Sierra bullets??

4064 for the Swift and whole bunch of H380 with CCI 250 primers in the 22-250.  This 22-250 is the only gun I've ever owned that needed max achievable velocity to get max accuracy and the H380 is the one that accomplishes that goal.

I'm a big Hornady fan and use a bunch of their products but nothing has ever outdone the Sierras for me in these 2 rifles.  I hear so many things about Varget being the goto powder but it's yet to be the best in anything I own.  Might be just what you need for your gun though.  I just try them all and let the gun choose.

I must say that since you don't yet have a chronograph anything you try is nothing more than a blind guess.  I shoot out to 520yds. from my back porch which makes load development a lot less hassle.

I've gotta say +1 for the H380 in the 22-250 and the Sierra 52 or 53 gr match bullets are worth a try.  If you're seating your bullets out a ways, you may need the flat based 53gr bullets to get a bit more bullet for the case neck to grip.
