Author Topic: Coyotes in a Residential Neighborhood (Read 1251 times)

Ok, I get a phone call from my wife today. Apparently one of her co-workers has been seeing several coyotes running through her back yard. She lives in a suburb of a big city. She is now afraid to let her dog outside (yard is not fenced in). She has tried the suburb and Animal Control and neither is wanting to do anything about it. This lady is a big time animal lover and is look for a way to get rid of the coyotes. So my questions is, does anyone know of a non-lethal way of getting rid of them? I'm a realist and know that there probably isn't but i thought I would ask the experts anyway!!

Very common problem all up and down the front range of CO. Far as I know nobody has found a "nonlethal" way to remove them.
In fact we get big city mountain lions, coyotes, foxes, bears, skunks, prairie dogs and others all the time.

You could try a cage type trap. I don't know how likely it is to work, because coyotes are pretty sly, but cage trapping it and then shooting it at a different location seems like the most "suburb friendly" way to go about it. If you're the sentimental type you could try releasing it alive I suppose.

Other than that, you're options are pretty limited. Coyotes are perfectly suited to a suburban environment, so the problem isn't likely to go away permanently any time soon.

Personally, I would get out my bow. I couple hundred grain broad heads going 315 fps seems that it might work.

Hardly non-lethal as nighthawk asked for!!

Nighthawk80, here are some links that may help, IMO a good fence would be in order to keep coyotes out and kids/pets safe.

Well, I personally don't get non-lethal when it comes to coyotes.

Non-lethal wouldn't be my first choice either, but it's the only choice for a lot of localities. Archery, firearms and even airguns aren't legal here within the city limits.

As I was told in the "Trapping Section", a number 3 Bridger with an offset jaw will work.
I did some reading, and the offset jaw will not break the lower leg(well, most of the time). Since the trap could be placed in the backyard, it could be checked frequently and any animal caught could be dealt with in anyway the person wanted. You would just have to keep the neighbors dog, your dog, and maybe the cat(nah) out of it.

Just another option for ya.

How do you get a live coyote out of a leg hold trap? I'll bet he will not stand there like your dog will.

Generally it's done with a .22 short from a pistol, but a catch pole is easy to make with PVC pipe and some stout, plastic covered cable. Just make sure you make it long enough that he can't come back up it at you!

I would not recommend trying to get anywhere near a wild animal that has it's leg in a trap.
Once again, non-lethal isn't going to be effective in getting rid of coyotes. That is why they are called varmints

I wouldn't recommend jumping out of a perfectly good airplane, but thousands of people do it without incident every year. Same goes for using a catch pole. I've never run across another way of releasing a non-target animal from a leghold trap alive.

Most certainly. Airedales work much better for the task of eating small furry critters though, with the added bonus of being able to chew coyotes up real good when they can catch them.

Does anyone know of any type of "sleeping pill: or a narcotizing effect pill, that could be "baited in " with say some hamburger meat......oops...may get an alley full of sleeping dogs , cats, and whatever else wandered through ...worth a shot though , if the only critters that come through are indeed coyotes.....we are in a small town, and even here, with tons of row crop to chase down mice , rabbits and quail....( scratch the quail...they are none)...coyotes will come hit garbage cans...scraps..., dog food, AND small pets.....lots if reports of missing cats and dogs....even a few pictures, of them being carried off,,,kinda bad....and I agree, I do not do non lethal on coyotes...

10-4 on the airedales, love them dogs.
To a coyote those cute little lap setters are nothing more than slow rabbits.
A catch pole is the thing for coyote or pet, have tried taking both out of leg hold traps, it
gets real western. Make sure the person holding the catch pole will keep the coyote or
dog off you while you work the trap. a fence might work but it would have to be tall
and go 10-12" underground (yotes can dig)
Cyniad works best rolled up in hamberger meat. puts them to sleep real fast.
