Mapsource 6.13.6
« on: January 31, 2008, 05:16:21 AM »
On computer when I open program and go to the east coast the program has you put the Metro Guide USA - East in drive  E:
to look at the East coast.
Is a way available to not do this each time?
If I was on west coast it would not be an issue as the West coast was loaded on Disk 1

There is a way to do it and I had it that way on a computer I have now retired.  Admittedly I had to get my wife to help me load all three disc using Map Source US TOPO.  I will try and find the step by step instructions.  Another member my be a little faster on this then I.

The method my wife used would have worked with most software's that come on more then one disk.. Basically it involved in combining the software from the two disk to one file on the hard drive.  It has been a few years I have forgotten the steps.  Recently one of our members mention he had them all loaded on his computer.  Hopefully he will step-up and give you some answers.

I believe it was you who mentioned having all the older Topo software loaded on your computer.  Can you help NOLA?

Last night I played around with the process and made a test run and it did not work.  The task requires a person with more computer knowledge and the Metro Guide software to insure the process works and does not shut down the computer operating system.  One method has the user modifying the system registry.  I use Topo USA on my desktop and on my laptop to support my Garmin gps.  Frankly I burned a second copy so I would have the second copy in the laptop case to support my gps on the road.

As more software is put on DVD’s these problems will be avoided.  The latest version of Metro Guide comes on a DVD.

Call Garmin support and find out if they have a process that will allow you to load both CDs to your hard drive.  I am sure this question has been asked before.  I have contacted them by phone and by e-mail in the past and I have found them very helpful. The call is toll free but you normally end up waiting about 20-minutes.  When I asked about a problem that the service representative could not answer he put me on hold a few minutes and got a person who could answer the question.  When I have e-mailed them with a question I normally get an answer in three days.  The answer is normally detailed and step-by-step.

I've done it several times.  The easiest way is to create a folder called \Garmin in the root directory of your C: drive.  Then take each of the 3 CDs and copy everything on each of the CDs into that one folder.  When you get through, your C:\Garmin folder should have a directory that looks like the attached image (click on the image below to see a larger copy).

After copying, simply browse that Garmin folder for a file called "Setup.exe" and double click on it to execute it (you'll see this as the 4th file from the bottom in the image below...it's a 20KB file).  Mapsource Topo won't ask you for the CDs ever again, and no registry changes should be needed.

Enjoy!

It worked all loaded on computer.
Now is there a way to do it with it already installed on a computer ?
I copied the files on East to file and it did not work.
I am going to try to run setup on  laptop to see if I can get it to work.

Rainman/GA and NOLA

I need to give Rainman/GA method a try.  I have a computer we using as the visiting grandkids computer.  When I have time in the next few days I will do a clean load of Topo USA and all three disk.  It has never had map source loaded on it.

Have a break in the storms this morning so a good walk comes first, then the bowl game but I will get there.  Time to pull out a gps, a coat, and take a walk, have a good day.

I appreciate both your efforts, you are contributing to our member’s knowledge.

Hey NOLA, glad to hear it worked for you.  By your handle, I assume you're from the New Orleans area?  I grew up about 1-1/2 hours north of there in S. Miss.  Spent a summer working oil platforms in the Gulf out of Morgan City & Venice.
