300 Whisper

Can't wait to see the answers to this one.  I was just going to ask the same question.  I have a 7-30 Waters that has a muzzle brake. Can't shoot it without ear plugs and i won't wear them while hunting. Thought i would give the Whisper a try this year. Lets hear some answers folks.

The 300 Whisper will not be any more quiet than any other round unless it is loaded to subsonic velocity levels.  This usually requires that 220-250gr .30 bullets be used.  At subsonic velocity with the heavy projectile, the round would be suitable only for vermin, two legged or four.  The name of the cartridge is based on the above loads in a supressed firearm.  The hunting level loads use a 125gr Ballistic Tip, or similar projectile at velocities in excess of 2000fps, which will be nearly as loud as any other round in that class.

Hunting w/ 7-30 & 300 Whisper...
« Reply #3 on: July 03, 2003, 07:46:59 AM »
I have two 7-30's w/breaks and the 12" is loud as %$#@.   The 309JDJ I have is MORE LOUD.  I hunt with electronic muffs I got from Midway. I just ordered another pair this week cause they are on sale for $30.00 off. They are the best thing since sliced bread for hunting and shooting at the range where you like to talk and raze your buddies w/o screaming.  8) I have taken several deer while wearing the muffs and they have helped me in taking them. They are electronic and amplify sound out to 100yds and with my bad (LACK OF) hearing due to running heavy equip and shooting for 35 years I have been able to hear deer and hogs moving in behind me. I would give them a try and keep the velocity up on your loads for good penetration and downrange accuracy. Good luck. By the way the ones I have are Silencio but there are several brands.

My 7x30 waters is magnaported.  I don't recall hearing the shot year before last.  I don't think the deer heard a thing either.  The ground probably slapped it along side the head before the noise could get there!

I hunt with a .300 Whisper..it isn't at its quietest until it is loaded down to subsonic levels, but it is not horrible at supersonic.  More of a boom like a 20-28 gauge shotgun instead of a ear piercing crack!  I would still recommend hearind protection;especially since the barrel is only 14" long!
I haven't had blood run out of the corner of eyes or nose yet!!I can't wait to see how it does on whitetails...as I didn't get to hunt at all last year(my first year of owning that barrel).

300 Whisper

Gee mark i guess i should have stayed out of this. We heard more about noise and the Waters than we did about the 300 Whisper. Come on folks lets get back to the 300 Whisper. That was the original question.

thats ok, yeah we did hear alot about the waters which I already have.  The book (cartrrides of h world) really sngs he praise o the 30 whsiper for medium size game with 125 to 150 gr bullets out to 200 yds.  Was wondering if anyone on the boards here had actually used one sucessfully.  Something else that caught my eye was the sentence about how much more effective it is than the 30-30 with less than 1/2 the recoil too.   I like the sound of that!.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that statement. Sure, the 300 whisper will use less powder to equal 30-30 velocity, but that is a minor variable in recoil energy figures. Any given bullet, at X velocity, will be just as effective whether it is fired in a .300 whisper, .30-30, or .300 win mag. using a 20 grain charge versus a 40 grain charge,  (a whale of a variation, BTW), keeping the same velocity, bullet, and gun, only results in a 12% increase in recoil energy. As the saying goes, there ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Just something to consider>>>>>>>>Bug.

The 300 Whisper doesn't work on deer, I shot at two deer last season and the bullets just bounced off the them    I know I couldn't have missed!

As far as noise is concerned, I always use ear protection at the range but never in the woods.  I can put up with the noise from the one or two rounds I fire in the deer woods.  I know it's probably not doing my hearing any good, but.......did you say someting?
