Ice in the Virginia mountains

Not bad here in Pulaski (in town) but up in Floyd much worse.  Lance said he was without power (except for generator) and there was a bunch of fence down.  Lots of broken trees and the power company red-tagged the power line.

We should be hearing again from him in a few days.

The wind is causing problems here.
It Blacked out a town of 17k now for two days.
I have an ONAN EM on an OT transfer switch  ,its been on and off for a few days now.
The back up water supply froze ,so i am down to just the well and i hope it holds up.
-30 ,if you don't have a 4x4 ,you are not moving.
Global Warming you know.

Where's this Global Warming? Did Al Gore forget to pay his powerbill this month? I know we had snow here in SC and it got me put in the Hospital.

Its good to hear from other parts of the country like this ,the news just doesn't report it on a human scale.
We wanted to go shoot one of the Cannon today ,but the snow is drifted over the door of where i keep them.
Don't you just love it when it melts ,then freezes again so you have to use a pick Axe.
Snow in Alabama and SC , yup sounds like Al Gore is right on the money.

sooner than i thought possible!!! got to hand it to the AEP workers, they have been non-stop cutting trees and fixing powerlines 48 hours straight. All we got was 1/4" of ice, but it looks like a battle field with all the broken trees. i'm just thankful the horses didn't find the broken fences before i did,probably still be horse hunting! FREE FIREWOOD to whoever wants some, there's plenty to go around!!!

Yeah I am fine. I had gotten a bad case of the flu and my oxygen level dropped and I have asthma ever since I moved from the low state up here where I am at now. I keep a bunch of firewood around here now after we got the big snow about 3 years ago with 2 feet. I hate when Gore forgets his powerbill the whole world just gets cold and the Global warming just leaves.

It'll be 50ish here, but there's still snow here and there.  Good day to get to the range if I weren't closing in on finishing the tile in the bathroom.

 It's been 75-79 here the last few days. I vaguely remember what that snow stuff looks like. saw it once in '74 ;)

 ;D ;D ;D intoodeep, you are too COOL!!!! that poor snowman didn't have a chance. it's been awhile since a big snow fell here, this year 3" last month and last weeks 1/4" ice storm. Been in the 60's past few days, But next time a decent snowman making snow falls, i might just make a whole army of them ;D

While I haven't had much snow at my home this winter, Snoqualmie Pass on I-90 50 miles east of Seattle has this winter had 35 feet of snow according to one of the Seattle tv news programs last night. That is only 95 miles from me. WDOT can't keep the freeway open with all the avalanches and no place to put the snow.

I think of the WORLD's highest recorded wind velocity at Mt Washington, NH - at 212MPH (when the anemometer blew away)!

I was at 2 boat shows today. We had a constant 30mph wind and gust up to 50. I was on the way back home and a gust that I know was more than 50 came and it was pushing the truck to the right. My trucks no small truck a Dodge Ram 2500 Club Cab with Cummins diseal and to be pushing it I am guessing it was 70 to 80mph.

It was fun today in the wind up 30+ feet above the ground watching all the stuff in the neighborhood blowing east.

Saw the recycle semi after it was overturned by those gusts.  (20 to 50mph)

Got the roof done though.

One of the advantages of having grown up in Iowa and moved to Virginia is the redefinition of terms.

My favorite is "bitterly cold".  It used to be -20F.  Now it's +18F.

Someone else ALWAYS has it worse.  Now it's LOTS more 'someones'.

Yup. Familiar with Iowa winters too. My mom's family has relatives there. My aunt was born in Mason City. My mom's bunch hails mostly from Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado. I used to live in Colorado. Ive been in all 50 states, it seems like they all have they all have their unique ability to make my bones shudder one way or another. I used to exchange emails with Lance down your way. When are you guys coming up here to grayling?

Glad to help on the dates. I posted the pics on the site on the tree damage to this site. Grayling is an impressive event. I think the NSSA blackpowder rifle and pistol competition is in May up there this year. The artillery match is really interesting to watch them nail those targets out to 1220 yards though. Thats near the end of July.  My friends dad's bunch comes up from Virginia to shoot Mortars and artillery. It takes them about 15 to 16 hours from Winchester but they are lugging a couple of three inch ordinance rifles, a couple of 8 inch seige mortars and a coehorn or two. One of that bunch is the caretaker of Fort Shenandoah down there at Winchester.

Thats a big weekend up there with the carshow plus the Weyerhauser canoe race and other evnts the same weekend. There are other things to do in the area. Camp Grayling is the largest National Guard base area in the US and if you want to roam the backwoods roads, coming across tanks, Palladins and other military equipment and personnel in the woods is quite common. {As long as they arent firing anyways, some of the roads have large gates or MP's that will block the roads}
