Laminate or Synthetic Stock???
« on: July 03, 2003, 07:59:35 AM »
I currently have a Rem 700 LA (7mm RemMag) that is wearing a Bell and Carlson Sporter type stock (Left Handed) and a Leupold Vari X III 6.5 x 20AO scope.  For the most part, I have limited the use of this rifle to long range hunting from shooting houses/blinds in which a prop or sand bag is available.  I am contemplating a new stock for this gun, and I am looking for suggestions.  I am thinking that I want a stock with a varmint style forend (flat and wide, about 2 inches) in order to further steady the high power scope I am using.  I am thinking I want Laminate, but please give me your thoughts about Laminate versus Synthetic, stock styles, manufacutrers, etc.  Please remember that this is a left handed rifle.  Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Smoky

I am sold on laminates. I think they look great especially the gray ones. Remington makes the BDL in left hand and magnum calibers with that laminated stock but not as wide as you want. All the stocks for Remington rifles with the laminated are made by Boyd Bros. so you might contact Boyd and ask them to make what you want.

I really like the laminates but I have both. In my locker, the synthetics are often lighter in weight, so they tend to go on the hunting rifles whilst the laminates more often end up on the target jobs. I'm a lefty too, and sometimes it limits your choices.

The laminates have one big advantage if you're a position shooter - you can whittle on them to make 'em fit! Usually less expensive than name-brand glass stocks too.
