New safety for 96 mauser
« on: February 02, 2008, 05:05:37 AM »
Hi

Will a good gunsmith be able to change the safety on my 96 mauser
to work behind the bolt from left to right instead of over the bolt
from left to right? Or is there a aftermarket one as for the 98?

Sweet

If you remove the safety and look at the cuts in the end.  That is what locks and unlocks the bolt.  If you have one make in reverse it will be left handed.
Other than that I would check Midway or Brownells for after market safeties  for custom rifles.
I think there are some made for 96 or 93 actions.  I think I have seen a couple of replacement parts that allow you to use a wing safety like on a Win M70.  But it may only be for the 98 actions.  There are some that are set up for scope mounts and are very low.
Good luck in your hunt.
I find it best to get the catalog and look, rather than search on line.
Or go to your favorite gun shop today and ask to see his copies.  You will be able to order it from them and not have to wait for the catalog to show up.  I had to lend my copies out to others as I start looking and new projects come to mind.

Sweet6.5 - check our sponsors list for major parts distributors, I believe MidSouth might carry something like that.

I simply replaced my entire trigger group with a Bold Trigger with integral safety and eliminated my concerns over the Mauser safety.  HTH.  Mikey.
