Accuracy of Super blackhawk???
« on: February 03, 2008, 04:16:10 AM »
I have a Ruger super blackhawk 44 mag with a 7.5" barrel. I topped it with a weaver 2x scope. What kind of accuracy would you expect to get at 50 yards. Should the pistol shoot 1" groups at 50 yards right out of the box? I'm trying to get a feel for the guns capabilities. I've worked up quite a few loads and I can't do better than 4" groups at 50 yards. I'm pretty sure the scope is not moving. Any help would be appreciated.

No it isn't likely to shoot one inch at 25 yards much less at 50 yards and we're talking the gun not the shooter holding the gun. Some will most likely won't. Stand by for dissenting opinions from Ruger fans.  ;D

No you shouldn't expect a SBH to average 1" groups @ 50 yds. It's a production line big game hunting revolver. You should be content with about 2 1/2- 3" . Some will average better, but not by much. That level of accuracy will kill any deer, javelina, hog, elk, or bear out to the limits of power and trajectory of the cartridge.

I own a few Rugers and enjoy them , Will they shoot 1inch groups at 50 yards ? Not any of them will even come close to that . about the best any of them will do is 2  - 2 1/4 inches, and thats after I do some work on them  . the only revolvers I own that will do one inch at 50 yards is my Freedom arms .454s , Wish I had one in .357 as i think I shoot better with a .357.
4 inch groups is nothing ruger will fix i dont think , I would think that with some tuning it will do better . The triggers are never very good out of the box ,A spring kit will help .  I also commonly install a belt mountain base pin . Just with those two improvements you could see a noticeable improvement . I would expect to be able to get to less than 3 inches If you are capable of holding on to it will enough.

Thanks guys. I wouldn't expect 1" groups but I was hoping for 2" groups at 50 yards. I'm a little spoiled with my 12" 44 mag  contender. It shoots 2" groups at 100 yards. I may be having problems with the scope base. It is the type that clamps in the front and screws in at the back using the rear sight screw. Has anyone used this type of scope mount?

Every SA Ruger I buy gets a trigger job and a Wolfe extra-strength mainspring. Some also get the bores lapped. You can get the spring from Brownell's. After adding just the spring, my last Super shot just over 1" at 25 yards with a 250-grain Keith bullet over 7 grains of 231 or 13 grains of HS6. I don't know if that's typical for a Ruger, but mine did it consistently.

I also find that it's easier for me to find an accurate load with cast bullets than it is with jacketed.

I own a SBH Hunter w/ a Simmons 4 x 32 scope. At 50 yrds I can stay in a 3 to 4 inch circle also.I have tried different reloaded ammo and all are about the same.Perhaps someone that's a better shot than me could do better. This probably as close as you are going get. It's close enough for me,cause it's a "hunter" not a target pistol........Rick

Slug the cylinder throats and try to match your bullets accordingly - it'll help you get the best from it that you can.

But I'm thinking 1.5" at 25m will be pretty good for a "standard" Ruger SBH.

it very likely is capable of shooting one inch 50 yard groups with a scope but youll need to do alot of load experimenting to find the majic combo you will also need an action job and the skill to shoot one that well. Ive never seen a super that couldnt be made to shoot. As a matter of fact i dont ever remember a ruger 44 handgun of any model that wasnt a shooter for me.
