Beaver questions.
« on: February 03, 2008, 07:36:46 AM »
I just started trapping beavers under the ice two weeks ago. I caught a 54# and a 15#, so I think my methods are right. The question I have is on the subject of the beaver itself. I'm finding areas to trap from some maps I got from WS from their beaver fly overs. Every weekend when I go to check my sets, I try to find another area to set. The areas I have set I know have beavers since I caught one at each spot. The lodges have freshly cut sticks on them and obvious feed beds. Other areas I have scouted I found lodges without fresh cut sticks on them, do they use lodges from year to year, and if so shoud I not worry about the lack of fresh cut sticks on the lodges? Another Question if the beavers are gone how long do their dams last without them there to tend them?

If the food supply is adequate, beaver will use the same lodge for years and years.
While new cuts are good signs on a lodge, lack of them doesn't mean the beaver are not there. Are there feedbeds at these lodges?

Lodges dont have to have new wood or mud on them... sometimes bachelor or barron females will be in lodge even without feedbed.  ANother thing if you can see feed bed sticks above ice, to and see if the wood is green by breaking some off and checking  inner bark ect.   Some lone bvrs dont put food in if there is something in pond that they can eat  such as lily roots ect... Ive even seen where the beavers  chew bark off of roots of trees that are in ponds.  Also someone might have trapped bvr out before ice up is also another situation.   If not sure put a test bait in   between old feed pile and lodge or just near lodge where you figure bvr are coming in and out which can be determined most times by  the opposite side bvr are coming up on lodge to depost wood and mud.   If bait is chewed off you got a live one down under the ice and set traps..  I usually put a baited bodygrip down as i have enough  .  Lots of times i come back and i have skinning to do...lol... good luck.

Tom, two spots that I scouted that had lodges that didn't have fresh sticks didn't have feed beds that I could see. Maybe the feed bed is completely under the ice. One spot the creek is only 4 feet. It had 3 dams and in the 3rd pool there was a lodge. the pond was very small compared to the other ponds that I've seen. It maybe was 8' wide, but did flood the brush around the lodge.
