Snow day stock
« on: February 03, 2008, 11:39:24 AM »
The girls had a snow day the other day. So had to keep them busy & their 357 max was in need of a stock soooo

We used green food coloring & black magic marker.   This was a stock that I had lying around ,so I took the roto zip to. Its real shorht & real thin around the handle. Fits my 6 y/o hands real good.    What ya think

Jay,
i thought  maybe it was. thats cool. so, let me ask, did you just sand off that blonde colored stain ? is there anything else or does the factory stain just come off ( like a top coating )?
i swapped a few stocks and forends around and the furniture on the .243 dont match well, so i want to restain them a gray, can i just sand off the factory finish?

Nice. This is the first time I have seen anything like that.
The sportsman lives his life vicariously. For he secretly yearns to have lived before, in a simpler time. A time when his love for the land, water, fish and wildlife would be more than just part of his life. It would be his state of mind

Ive got an adult monticarlo that isnt doing anything. I may re shape that & try  a lighter mix of green. Ive tried green waterbsed stain. The wood wouldnt take the stain. So I tried food coloring. Maybe just a drop or two in a cup of water for a real light green. May look good on my 45/70

Looks very good.  Did you top coat it to seal in the color or do they have green cheeks also?

Started out a  pallet wood stock off a shotgun. Warm water & some food coloring. The wood took it real good. Im thinking next time just a couple drops of green would just kinda tint the wood.

you kept TWO 6yr olds busy for an hour....doing ANYTHING is quite a feat! The fruits of their labor is SWEET...I'm gonna give it a go...maybe just rub color in and overlap different colors  here and there for effect. And yup...if it fails to give me the effect I want...paint time!   ;D

Looks great! Good work!

I could see that looking very much like tree bark, if you used a different color! I'm sure it makes the little tikes eyes light up!

I've used RIT liquid dye a few times. I've found it works best mixed with alcohol (70% isopropyl) at about 50/50 ratio...more if you want a darker color, less for lighter.

The marker is a neat trick! I've used that method in the past with paint pens to simulate Lightening...go back over it with an airbrush and it looks darn realistic.

Kudos to you!

That's real sharp and great child activity too!
Dyeing, striping.... LOTS of places to go with that idea. ;)

I like the thin wrist too, did up a Monte Carlo into straight grip like that on my .58 Huntsman. Easy grasp when wearing thick gloves.

jay,
did using water on the stocks raise the grain at all ? im not sure what type of wood the pallet stocks are , they seem fairly hard but i was wondering about raising the grain with water and having to sand it back down.
