358 Winchester Long Throat
« on: February 03, 2008, 06:48:05 PM »
Has anyone adapted a medium or long action to the .358 Winchester so that 225 and 250 grain bullets can be seated with base of bullet flush with case neck?  I like this idea in a yugo-M-48 or some other medium length mauser action.  I like the idea of a 358 Win with 250 grain bullet seated out like that.

If someone else has done this I would really enjoy hearing your results.  Best.

Why not just rechamber to .35 Whelen?  The action fits, and any velocity increase in the .358 Win with bullets seated to the base of the neck would not equal or duplicate those of the Whelen with the same bullet.   The Whelen has an abnormally long neck already, so minimal intrusion into the powder column doesn't reduce powder volume with the heaver bullets, thus maximum velocity from the powder column.  One can always download the Whelen to .358 Win velocity if wanted also.

The M-48 is too short for 30-06 length rounds. It's limited to 57 mm rounds (8x57, 7x57, 6.5x55, 257 Robts.  6mm Rem.)

The 358's neck isn't all that short either. In my BLR the 250 grain Speer protrudes only slightly into the boiler room.  The advantage I suppose would be that you would be able to use Accubonds and X bullets with a bit more ease. I say go for the build and would do one myself if I didn't already have a Whelen on a commercial mauser action. Plus the BLR is a good platform for the 358.

As it happens, I like the .358 Win  over the .35 Whelen and that's one of the reasons for my interest in this concept.  The .358, however, is a little short on powder capacity for 250 grain bullets.   Chambering for long throated rounds would give me more power capacity that might overcome this problem.   I am not trying to turn a 358 into a 35 Whelen.

Thank you for your interest and responses to this thread.  I always enjoy the feed back I receive on this site when I float some off the wall idea.  The collective insight, experience and observations of the folks on this board have probably saved me hundreds of dollars on ill conceived projects that I would otherwise have pursued.
