Here is a newer picture then my last post that includes my new (to me) 1894 CS in .357 Magnum. Now I hope I can find as good a deal on a 44 mag version as I did this one.

Some one can probably be more accurate than me but I believe Ballard rifling has 6 equally spaced lands and groves (what you would normally think of as rifling). Micro grove has many (I believe 12) lightly cut groves

In November, I was given a 336C in .30-30 that was made in '82. Some TLC and she accounted for two does in late November. In January I bought a 336C .35 Remington for $100, made in '75, that needed some TLC. With 180 grain Speer FP's and some H-4895, I believe I have found the "thumper". I had been Marlinless since 1977, when I had a brain spasm and sold my 1974 336A to buy a .270 bolt rifle. I'm glad to be back!

I have a 1895 45-79, and a 336 with 18" barrel 1/2 mag straight stock has AW on the barrel I think it was a Wally World gun It's a good shooter I'll Post pictures later.

I have a 1948 production A model with the longer barrel and 'real' rifleing. It's in nice shape for it's age,and sure is fun to plink with with light Unique loads.

I've got just one, a 336A (1949) in .35 Remmington. It's a hand-me-down from my grandfather, my main deer gun for the last 15 years.

I have only one and right now it is enough. I found a 1894-p model which is a 16.5" ported 44 cal rifle. The gun had never been fired but no box or papers. This rifle at the bench produces pain with 240 gr bullets that is beyond my 338 mag. It is hard to snuggle up to this gun to sight it in. Standing for a off hand shot is way better. My plan is to use receiver sights, 240g wp lead bullets,@ 100yds max going -1200 fps, a good truck gun, and a very good defensive weapon.

I got a wonderful christmas present from my wife last year - she had found a well used 45/70 Guide Gun and sent it to Brockman for a complete workover. I don't want to know how much she spent but let me telll you it is worth every penny.
this thing drives tacks and is smooth as silk. it also has the Talley Q/D rings for my scope.

I can highly recommend Brockman for any work on a Marlin lever gun.

A old bolt action .22 that I teach the grandkids to shoot with.
A 1894 .32 lever made in 1914.
A Marlin Sako in .222. This one's my favorite, best varmint gun I've ever owned.

I like the Ballard cut rifling the best for lead bullets. Microgroove is good for copper jacketed bullets. I have taken steps to prevent the dreaded Marlin jam on all these rifles. Have not had any malfunctions yet.

No I do not Have anything to prove one better then the other as far as accuracy. When they are both clean they shoot the same. But the microgroove of mine leads up much faster then the Ballard rifling. both rifles in 41 mag are microgroove and the Ballard cut rifling is in 45colt.210 grain rcbs mold, solid base bullet sized and lubed to .410. in the 41's and a 255 grain in the 45 lubed and sized to .452 using the same lube on all boolits which is zambini high velocity rifle. I am only loadind at the 950 fps plinker loads. but shoot 200 to 300 rounds at a session If I would clean them more frequently say at a 50 round interval leading wouldn't be a problem. I am using unique for a powder.8 grains in the 41's and 8.5 grains in the 45. there are probably better powders out there for the specific loadings but i have a lot of unique. This is just my observation in my rifles. Yours are different. When I bought the 41 cowboy I was under the impression it would have Ballard rifling in it . It has microgroove in an octagon barrel. The 45 cowboy has octagon barrel with Ballard rifling.

What's the difference between the two rifling systems? Have you investigated using a different allow to cast with, you didn't mention bullet hardness, either bullet gas checked or not? Just because your keeping your velocity down, doesn't mean your not going to get leading, does it?
Sorry but, you expressed a popular theory from the Internet, and I would like to know why you believe this? Mind you, I'm not saying your wrong, just want someone to convince me this is true with cold hard facts.

T he bullets are water quenched wheel weight material dropped hot from the mold into a 5 gal. bucket of cold water. Bhn of 8 to 13 then heat treatment in an old oven Then quenched again will give a bhn hardness of 25 to 35 this data is taken from the Rcbs Cast Bullet Manual #1 printed in 1986. The bullets i shoot are not gas checked or bevel based. they are a flat base bullet . To be fair maybe the bullets I am shooting are not being pushed fast enough to keep gas cutting of the base from occurring ,although I have not seen any gas cutting from the bullets I have recovered after firing. They are Hard. shooting into phone books etc plywood backing boards and such the bullets show no deformation other then the rifling on them. I am also using a soft sticky high velocity rifle bullet lube in loading for pistol and rifle. And some lube is usually still in the lube groove. It could be also that I have shot very little copper jackets through these rifles and maybe the bore is a little rough yet. But the fact remains MY rifles With Microgroves Lead quicker then my Ballard rifling one do. It is a problem to experiment more on. And after a few more hundred or thousand rounds Down range maybe the problem will cure it self. due to polishing the bore a little more. I compleately clean with coated rods and bore guides after a range session and before a range session. to remove any gas fouling and shooters choice Kroil mixture. Haven't played with moly on the lead yet something to try . Moly works to keep copper fouling down to a minimum in the varmint bench rest rifles. Anyway hope this helped.

thanks,ol grizz.i live near gore mtn. 20 mins north of lake george.we went to the utica show on sat.no go on the 45/70.i really didn't find anything i wanted.they had two kinds of guns,junk and overpriced.i may end up just ordering a new one.i am taking turns spending money on my truck and buying guns.both are expensive hobbies,lol.
