reloading 45acp with speer shot capsules?
« on: February 04, 2008, 03:48:09 AM »
CCI loads the 45lc with those blue shot capsules - made for revolvers
CCI loads the 45acp with some type of crimped brass --- however it's made, you can't use it in revolvers (like ruger's blackhawk convertible)

Is there enough room in a acp case to reload using the empty speer capsule made for the 45lc?

It will likely shatter on the feedramp when it jams up spilling shot everywhere.

Reed - you're talking semi-autos aren't you?

Sorry for not being clear. I was in fact talking about a revolver.

I think you will find the shot capsules made for the LC too long to load in an ACP case and still chamber in the Ruger.  I have a convertible but have never loaded shot loads for it. Why not load the shot caps in the .45 LC cases?

If nof, RCBS makes reloading die sets to do them? I think you use trimmed .308 cases?

Shot capsules need a heavy roll crimp to hold under recoil of a revolver. ACP brass headspaces on the case mouth and therefore should not be role crimped. If you're using moon clips you could get away with roll crimping but ACP dies generally will not produce a roll crimp. With enough tinkering and testing I'm sure you can make something work, I have done so, but I doubt it is worth the bother unless you really are snake infested. A better solution is one of the Comanche singleshot .45/410 pistols, they really are as effective as a .410 long gun and retail under $200 if you can find one.

Sorry, my first post wasn't quite to the point but, load one up and see if there's enough room for the cylinder to turn freely, with the shot capsules. They may have enough room, using the fast burning powders recommended for shot loads I've never tried it? I'm afraid you'll have to do some experimenting.
