How durable is the matte blue finish on Remington (CDL) rilfes?
« on: February 04, 2008, 08:43:30 AM »
Personally, I've always preferred high gloss finishes because in my experience rough matte finishes always rusted easier.

It seems as though the pores in the metal are better sealed when they have a gloss finish applied. When wearing matte finishes, they seem to hold more moisture and rust much easier. Therefore, I've always disliked Remington's SPS and Special Purpose matte finishes.

What are your thoughts and experiences on the subject.

The CDLs I've seen were gloss blued.  But then, I don't exactly live in main stream America.  I have one matte finished rifle. A heavy barreled VS with the sythetic stock.  I've had it long enough that it's gone thru one factory re-barrel.  I can't say one way or the other.  My gut feeling is the matte finish isn't more prone to rust than the gloss but I keep an oil rag kinda handy and try to keep my rifles wiped down with it.
