conturing a barrel

I got a deal on a new barrel "uncontoured".Is there any special procedure to turning it down.Will I stress the barrel?

Barrels grow as they heat from the lathe turning process.  As they should be turned between centers to maintain concentricity tension must be checked often. There are spring loaded centers that will allow some growth without allowing runout.  I always use a steady rest to maintain the barrel as straight as possible and don't use excessive pressure.  Be patient, don't rush the process.  This is a procedure that really needs coolant!  Good luck and a safe, happy fourth!!!

Read what gunnut said real carefully.  He is right on.  Don't take any shortcuts and lots of coolant.
