Questions for Law Enforcement folks about 9mm ammo

Can anyone here explain the designation (XM9MP) on this 9mm ammo? In particular, the MP initials.
Also, what are they used for and in what weapons are they used?

Bill just a thought. Do you think you might be breaking a law here? I don't know if they enforce such a thing but it does say for law enforcement use only. Dale

cant tell you what weapons or use they are for but the XM9MP is federals product code number for that particular load. im sure the MP designation is just federals markings for all millitary and law enforcement only ammuntion. i wont ask how you got ahold of it.

You can buy this type of ammo in many places - some Police Departments trade old stock for new stock (so the dealer can sell the old stuff), other PDs don't accept contracts for some reason so the dealer has stock on hand, etc.  For a good example, CDNN markets the Winchester Ranger "Law Enforcement Ammunition" for us non-LEOs to buy.  How many guys have Glock or AR mags that say "LEO-only", that are now OK to be owned by anyone in a 'free' state since the 1994 ban went away?  Just because it says "LEO-only" doesn't necessarily mean that you will get in trouble for it, fellas.   ::)

Dale, thanks for your concern but it is not illegal to own Law Enforcement ammo. If you look at some of the online firearms auctions you will find many sales for Law Enforcement ammo. Most will have a note similar to this with their ads:

"Typically this ammo is only available to law enforcement and military agencies through Federal, that is a Federal rule, not a law. We got this ammo, because we ordered it for a police department and they cancelled the order, so we can now sell it to anyone. This ammo is extremely hard for us to get and we have limited supplies."

Yes, there are some states that do restrict these sales but Oregon is not one of them.

I would never do anything illegal Dale... ;)

Just an educated guess, the MP is military/police. Higher velocity. Flat meplat for more shock, while still complying as an fmj.

GatCat you may be on to something there with the Meplat and the MP designation.  The +P+ would be high velocity without a doubt.
Since Federal no longer lists these, it makes it tough to get much info.
I'll keep digging on google...

It does say "Match" so it would not be something that would normally be issued for street use. Also, I don't know of any department that uses a FMJ SWC (too much penetration). It looks like it would be used for some kind of match use. Maybe the +P+ is to make it more like the duty ammo and thus make the target shooting or whatever more realistic. The full metal jacket semi-wadcutter would cut cleaner holes in paper as well.

I can't imagine what the Match designation is about, but surmise from the +P+ power level and the FMJ bullet that these loads were likely intended for use in machine pistols rather than handguns.
