Just curious...Bore life
« on: February 05, 2008, 10:24:15 PM »
Has anyone done a study of how long a properly cared for inline .50 barrel ( specifically a T/C omega) barrel should last? I'm thinking almost indefinately as erosion shouldn't be an issue and the sabots should give very little wear. Perhaps cleaning patches would cause more wear than firing. I've put 1200 rounds through a Traditions Tracker 209 and 1100 through my Omega Z5 and excepting a bit of silvering at the muzzles , both rifles still show about 85% of the blueing remaining in the bore. It would be interesting to see such a study. One of the attractions  of muzleloaders ( to me) is how long they can last when properly cared for. How many rounds through your barrrels and how has accuracy changed , if at all.

I know they will last a very long time. I haven't put more than 100 though my 45cal t/c encore and I had a Remmy 700 ML that I put 500 rounds though. The other ML's I have don't have more than 75 through them. I would expect many many years of service from a ML if you clean it right.

About the same life as a 22 rim. 20,000 rounds?

What is your reasoning for comparing a .22 to a ML?

Also on a side note I have .22's with way over 20,000 rounds and one is almost 100 years old. Remington Model 6 Improved but this is the wrong forum for rimfire talk.
