Marlin 336 Question
« on: February 06, 2008, 06:07:51 AM »
I have my eye on a 336RC that I may want to buy, it is a little beat up, Stocks (pistol grip) need to be refinished or replaced and the magazine is missing, action seems to work fine. Looks like a fix me upper, how much can this be worth and where can I get parts for this.  It is a 30-30 according to the serial # starting with K it was manufactured in 1953.

I would guess the condition you describe, maybe, 150.00 tops. Defiantly sounds like a project rifle and they can be fun.

Well I did a little research for parts before buying the thing. I ended up buying the Marlin for a 120$ and calculate all parts needed and maybe some on the springs that are not needed to replace them as well (they are not too expensive any way) the rifle should not go over 300$. I already did a little touch up on the blueing and can out better than I hoped for and also ordered a new stock and fore end. It will be just like band new I guess.

Sounds like you did good. Where did you get the new stock from? You can't go wrong for 300 bucks. Have fun.

You'll love this gun. ;)

I've got a '69 model 336 in 30-30, and its the best shooting gun I own.(not to mention my favorite) You can buy just about any off-the-shelf ammo at China-mart, and it will shoot 3/4'' and under at a 100 all day. I've taken 12 deer with it, and none of them went over 25yds and dropped. Some dropped in their tracks.

Marlin carbines have toppled many animals.  I doubt if you can actually wear one out in a lifetime unless neglect is a factor.

Its a lucky person who can hunt and shoot enough to wear out a gun.

You did a great job on that rifle. It looks like it is brand new. You did an especially good job on the bluing. I have tried to reblue some cheapo guns before just for practice and haven't had much luck.

I purchased this rifle from a old antique dealer. He told me that he purchased this Marlin from a Government auction where he was told that this
firearm was confiscated by the Royal Canadian Mountain police from a poacher, who knows. The hardest part was the bluing, to get it a nice dark blue and consistent. Here is a picture of the Marlin with its old stocks next to it. I 'am very happy to see the weapon restored to it's forming glory.

You have to imagine the weapon in the above picture with the old stocks, no magazine barrel and a fairly wore down blue.  Here is a picture or two more. I have not fired it yet but I confident it will shot just fine the barrel is spot less inside. I picked up some Winchester super x powerpoints 170 gr, I will try them first I would also like to try the hornady Leverevolution ammo. It will be sometime before I can go out and try it because we have  snow and more snow on top of snow here, much more than previous years, I havent seen this much snow since the late 1970's.
