Scout mounts work great since the M44 is a small carbine.
Easily a good 200 yd deer gun with good ammo - the 7.62x54 has plenty of power for most deer uses
Be sure to get good ammo with good bullets
Darrell's is the best Mosin scout mount maker if I remember correctly
Mastering the safety is pretty easy once you get used to it-can be done quickly enough for deer hunting (use the buttplate in the elbow technique)

I just put a scout mount on my M44 and love it.  It's taken 3 hogs already.  I bought the scope and mount from UAG on Ebay.  it was only $55 after shipping (scope, rings, and mount).  Yeah, I know it was cheap, but it still works.  The mount is good, and I can upgrade the scope later.  Though I did use some low weaver rings I had because the ones supplied were too tall.  The other day a friend took me out to his range that he's setting up and we place some more targets (out to 400yds so far) and did a little shooting.  The M44 was scoring hits at 280yds and a few at 340.  But these were not kill shots.  I'd trust mine out to 200yds on just about any game animal in North America.  It's surprisingly accurate.  I joked that my entire rig cost less than the trigger on his remington .308 and I was still hitting steel at 340yds...though not quite as accurately.
