Savage gunsmiths
« on: February 06, 2008, 08:59:50 AM »
I just picked up an old Savage 110 that is in need of a new BBl, and good cleaning up. The factory said that they don't work on rifles made before the new management took over.
Does anyone know of any gunsmiths  that deal mainly with Savages ?

How old a gun?  (pre or post 1966 +/-).  Caliber?  Got a pic?

Guns made in the 70's and later can be rebarreled by the average joe, with common sense and a set of headspace gages.

I've done about 5 so far.  Barrel changes, bedded stocks and all.

Post 1966, I'd guess mid 70's talking to the old owner, it's a 30-06, Where do you get the BBL's, and the BBL nut wrench ??

Thanks for the help

Midwayusa has a lot of the items.

A lot of barrels change hands at savageshooters.com, but the classifieds are open to paid members only.  Lots of good advice for accurizing a savage though.

There are a few things to look for regarding the bolt head and barrel to ensure they are interchangeable with current production items,  these involved how the bolt  fits to the barrel in the older guns compared to the newer ones.

You may have an older barrel nut also (one hole in the nut, that requires a spanner type wrench), where some have found it easier, if replacing the barrel, just to cut the nut and replace it with a newer one.

If you lived close by (central NC), this would be one of those occasions I would say, get the parts and stop by.

Looking at some of your other posts, are you a lefty?  Just curious.  I finishing a 110CL restocking job.

ncsurveyor as an owner of an 110CL I would like to see pictures of your finished product.  I have not found after market stocks common for the CL.

I have not found after market stocks common for the CL.

Tell me about it!

1st.  Numrichs has factory CL stocks for about $75+. I think - memory is getting on, ya know.

This CL looked like it was dropped by the original owner the year it was built and the trigger bracket was bent, and the original stock broke in a couple of places.  Everything else looked too good to pass up.  Bolt locks up tighter than dick's hatband.

What I did was take one of the new stocks from a 110GLXP3 (centerfeed), and just went to town with a router and dremel.

Routed out for the bottom metal, bedded the recoil lug, and reset both factory pillars to ensure some free floating.  Once the bottom metal was placed to get the clip feed lips to the right height, what I have noticed is that the bottom metal is recessed into the stock by 1/8 to 3/16 inches.  I need to decide whether I will take off an eight from the entire bottom or what.

I assure you, its nothing fancy.  My first experiments never are, but it will be functional.

Of course, now that I got a big cross vise for my drill/mill, maybe the next one I do will look neater.  I'm thinking of getting laminates and making some lefties for those of us poor souls that are so blessed.

I've been toying around with thumbhole designs, varmint tapers, etc in computer models.  At some point, I'll have to produce one for distribution.

I'll get pictures of this one up somewhere, when its done.

Sorry for the hijack, wayne.

for factory take-offs, contact Jim Briggs:  briggs.j-b@comcast.net    (763)420-7163

If you are looking for after market barrels, than that's bigger money.  There's a number of manufacturers that have them based on what quality you're looking for.  shilen, shaw, hart, lilja, douglas, etc.  Most of those can be found by search.  Not sure how many of them keep them in stock, though and lead time might be a pain.

Jim sells a lot of factory take off barrels , He has recently started stocking Shilene also.

Sharp Shooter supply is the numero uno Savage smith bar none , that's just about all he works on . His specialty is Savage rifles and strykers. Fred uses Douglas blanks , but will thread and chamber a different brand if you supply the tube , He also does receiver straightening.
