Coyotes and more coyotes

The dab of snow we got here in SE Missouri made for a great day to get out and find a place to hunt coyotes....went to a open patch of ground near a stream I hunt wood ducks in ...and found the layout to be pretty decent....had downloaded a few of the MP3 distress calls...and burned a CD....too a external speaker , wired it to a power supply, and presto....a pretty loud call setup.....after the first 3 minutes of silence, it began to belt out a cotton-tail distress call...20 minutes later, a pretty decent sized male comes in , and into gun range.....he never stopped trotting, so I had to do a on the run shot..and hit him back ..further than idea,,,,he went  down and rolled and got back up running....stopped, and I ended the day for him.    I used a 204 CZ 527 rifle....had the first shot been "on"...I would have had him down them ...32 grain v max...entered and exited.....130 yards....maybe a bit less...but it did the job..  A few minutes later, three coyotes came in together....but WAY far away ....350 , 400 yards.....too far for me ..gonna go back out this Sat am ...and do it again....breaks the winter blahs...that is for sure...

Well, I am gonna try and find a better way to get the sound out ...my rig is OK, but I need more volume.....saw a unit for sale on a on line mag for 49 bucks...that may be what I need.......plenty of coyotes...they just need a little noise t make believers out of them ...AND I gotta start taking my camera...

Tomorrow morning the weather man says in the mid to low thirties.....with all the heavy rain we had with that horrible tornado driven set of storms we had on Tuesday ....I know there will be lots of standing water where I hunt.....don't know if that helps or hurts.....but it limits them to higher ground....some , I guess....sounds like Sunday am will be even colder, so some of that water may ice skim over....just wanna see the dogs running , we have way too many around here.......I know the Conservation boys in Missouri say they do not add to the loss of quail...saying it is all habitat, and I agree ...but man ...when there are this many....you would think common sense would say yes...they Do have an effect....just my 2 cents.....but when I think of it, now, kinda like the chicken or the egg.....none here now, for them to eat....y'all be safe out there...and I wish you all luck , and accurate shot placement.

This little mini-amp from Radio Shack would probably save you $29 of the $49 unit that you are looking at and will probably have better volume. Is pretty simple, 1/8" patch cord (also avalible at radio shack) (need two) goes from the external jack on your player to the In jack on the amp. The second cord goes from the out jack on the amp to your external speaker. That little amp can produce 40watts and takes a 9v battery.
If you do not have an external speaker, I would try one of the cheaper round  automotive types (say a 5" rated @ 30watts-around six bucks) although you may have to mount it in something. Do not be scared to cut the male end off of one of those patch cords if you have too. There is only two wires and just two leads on the speaker.

Thanks for the info.....I have a radio shack about 1/4 mile from my office...I am gonna swing by after lunch .  Thanks...I will let you know how it works out, if they have the stuff in stock .    Thanks glanceblamm

Got the amp and the wire///looking for that speaker now..and may have to get it on line....can't find one here....went this past weekend with just a rabbit distress call, the hawks and crows loved it.....and a couple of bald eagles swooped over high ...but no coyotes.......there had been some obvious tractor activity in the large layout field I hunt......lots of acres disc-ed.....so I am thinking this might have dropped their interest in the place...time to relocate for a few weekends

When you get those hawks & crows stirred up it is time to look sharp! The Coyotes are hunting for the same game that the Hawks are and those crows are ever watchfull for an opportunity and will a lot of times, be just ahead or just behind of the Coyotes.
I am not saying that you had Coyote's present at that stand but you can bet that if there was any within 2miles that they could hear the ruckus and be heading your way. Times like this can make it worth staying at the site for 40min or so.

The Coyotes can be kind of like a Squirrel when it comes to sighting one. The yote can really hug the cover while it run's on it's belly..zig-zagging and such. When calling, try to use your full peripheral vision to look at nothing in particular but everything in general. This seems to really help out on picking up subtle movement on the predators part.

Your choice to relocate for a few weekends is a good one. You don't want to hit the same area too often unless you can provide a change-up or different sound for that area.

Well here in our part of the world...anymore, snow...is a rare bird....when it does come....and probably because our contrasting sight, gives us SO much more opportunities to spot even the slightest movement...I am just really disappointed the snow did not fall on a Friday afternoon, or a Saturday...( when I have days off work)....this time it came on a Tues and Weds....with no way for me to get out....oh well...maybe the weatherman will be right about Friday , a couple inches of snow possible......I need all the "peripheral " sight...I can get....have three more places I can go ....so I will mix it up...thanks for all the info and advice...

Pony D I live in central MO.  I have gotten a few coyotes this year.  The ole 22-250 does a great job on them.  I electric call and I use mouth calls.  Both have worked.  I hear that in western MO between Joplin and KC is the best area in MO to hunt coyotes.  What say you?

I have never hunted coyotes out that way ....I do know , that here, in the delta of the boot heel of Missouri .......they are thick.....I mean thick....so much open ground, and irrigation ditches bordering most of them ....I literally see them in winter summer spring and fall....I am just getting into seeing the value of them , as a very crafty game animal.....more coyotes here , than deer, or quail , or pheasant....now waterfowl , well, we are blessed with being on the Mississippi flyway , and having tons of row crop flooded, rice, corn etc...so I mostly duck hunt, and coyote hunt here.....when in Rome........I look forward to more good hunts here, until the season takes a break ...here it is March 31st ....so i am gonna hunt them hard till then ....
