Best slug gun for the $$
« on: February 06, 2008, 12:42:29 PM »
Whats the best slug gun that you can buy that is accurate that wont' break the bank? I've heard many good things about the H&R single shots, what about pumps action shotguns?  I'll be heading out to IL this fall and want to be able to shoot 150 yards.  I plan on gettin the nikon slugster scope to help for bullet drop off, but what gun do you guys prefer?

H&R is the best slug gun on the market. Because the real professionals use this not Joe somebody. Also pump action sluggers are not nearly as accurate because of all the mechanisms moving to reload the gun, also all the gases of sorts escape. The H&R's patterns are at 100 yards has a .75 inch pattern, at 150 yards has a 4 inch pattern, at 175 yards has a 5 inch pattern. My next door neighbor has a friend who owns an H&R, at 200 yards put a 6 inch pattern. I am getting one this summer and putting a scope on it. I thought the same thing get a pump action slugger so if you miss you can reload and get that shot off, all that matters is your first shot not your second your first, and you can buy this gun for 350.00 dollars with a scope. So if I were you I would buy this gun.

Hope I helped

I've been going through the same thoughts. After all the research, heres what I came up with.  I agree the H&R and the Savage 210 bolt are probably the most accurate, however not a fan of the single shots and the recoil of the Savage along with the ejection problems was more than I wanted to deal with, and  Tar-hunt is way out of the question price wise. I decided to get an 1187 with the Monte Carlo stock and put a 24 inch 1-26 twist Badger barrel on it and have it pinned, and a trigger job. All through a company out of  Weedsport, NY called Da-mar that I've used before, for a tick more than the Savage 210. They did my 1100 and I was able to shoot 3 inch groups at 100 yards. I don't think the difference between these somewhat custom guns and the single shot or bolt guns is that noticeable. And the trade off is much less recoil and and the ability for follow up shots if needed. Although I agree the 1st one is what really counts. And if the price of the 1187 is to much you can do the same thing with the 870 with the 23 inch heavy slug barrel for a bit less. Hope that helps.

The best deal on a slug gun is, hands down, the Mossberg 500.  However for a little more money the H&R Ultra Slug Hunter is shorter, more accurate, and quieter in the field.

I used the Mossberg 500 for years, slug barrel but not rifled. No matter what type slugs I fed it I could never get consistent groups. they were all over the paper and the deer! So I switched to the HR single shotguns and though it is a trade off on not having a quick follow up shot, I am much more comfortable with the accuracy.

We have gone to the NEF Tracker II in 20 ga. These are lightweight, extremely accurate, and handle great in an elevated tree stand.
We have about $135 in each one including scope rail and hammer spur. We have variable low power 20mm scopes on ours. Another good scope I'm finding out is the Bushnell Banner in 1.5-4.5x32mm. The 20 ga although being light (under 6lbs.) with scope has manageable recoil even with the 2000 fps Winchester Partition Gold ammo. A pleasure to carry, quick to the shoulder, and extremely accurate. Check them out. Who could ask for more?

I've always been a fan of the boltaction shotguns.  My dad, brother, and I hunted with the Marlin 512s.  A friend of mine has the Mossberg boltaction.  All are great guns and deadly accurate.  Both my dad and I have taken deer at 150 yards.  I've since retired my Marlin and hunt exclusively with a  muzzleloader (tc hawken or encore - both are good as well).

You can find either the marlin or mossberg for good prices.

The H&R USH is without a doubt the best deal. For the price of most replacement barrels you can buy an H&R,and have a whole gun.Pumps, and Auto's do have a little downfall to them, but if you get one with a cantilever barrel it will be better. The bad thing about the USH is that it is a single shot so follow up shots, and multi-kills are slower to come about. With some practice you can reload the single shot in a fairly quick fashion, but no where near as quickly as a pump or auto.

I have sighted in scoped 870's with rifled barrels and they were good enough, but you won't hit anything less than a basketball past 100 yards.

I have owned a H&R Ultra slug hunter and it was one heck of a shotgun and it could probably get you to the 150 yard mark you're after.

I have a Savage 210F that outshoots the others (even though not by much on the H&R).  In my opinion having owned and shot a couple different types of slug guns the 210F is the best hands down.

Savage is known for affordable accuracy, H&R is known for being the least expensive option in any case.  These two would be my picks if I were you.

Sabot slugs are expensive and abusive.  I'm much happier with my 44 mag rifle.  The only reason I don't hunt with my 210F anymore is that my state just started to allow people to hunt with rifles in pistol calibers.

+1 for the H&R USH. My 20 gauge H&R is the most accurate slug gun I've owned and shot. I did get a Savage 210F this year but I've not had the chance to shoot it yet.

My 210F was a big fan of the 3" federal Barnes Expander slugs, yours may or may not like those, but it's worth a box to try it out.

So far I have some Lightfield Hybreds in 2 3/4" and some Hastings 2 3/4". Going to try some Winchesters, Federal, and some Remington ammo also. Have you guys had any feeding problems with the 2 3/4" shells?

I never had any problems with feeding. One time when we had crawled across a dirt field in the rain it didn't want to eject the shells after I shot, but after it was cleaned...no problems.

Loading the slugs into the magazine was the only real trick that I had to learn.  That fit and function just fine, but there is a little trick to loading the slugs, but that's just part of getting to know your gun.

How do the triggers compare? The USH for example, doesn't "look" easily opened for tuning - no idea, just wondering.

I've owned the Savage 210F bolt action.  It wouldn't feed the second round out of the magazine, & it wasn't really that accurate.  I love the NEF/H&R single shots.

Mine fed either 2 3/4 or 3" about the same, but loading them into the magazine was the tricky part.  Overall I got good accuracy out of mine, but I was more than happy to sell it when the state changed the laws.

YEP ! i find the lightfields have a tad bit "HIGHER " brass and if careful i can start the rim of the shell I'm loading on the brass of the already loaded shell and it loads sorta ok . But if the rim gets on the plastic hull and not the brass it becomes almost imposible to get the second shell in the mag.

Remington 870 Express with the factory 18' Improved Cylinder barrel. Mount a decent shotgun or red dot scope on it. I use basic Winchester 2 and 3/4 inch slugs and can group five rounds in a circle the size of my fist at 100 yards in this configuration. You can find that gun for under $300. Plus you can use it for many other applications... home defense, upland bird. I only used my 870 once as a slug since moving to Texas ten years ago (it was the only gun I had when I moved down here). I dropped a doe at 105 yards... and when I say dropped, I mean she was dead before she hit the ground. Good value, reliable name. NEF/H&R has better value, but not nearly the reliability... from experience.

Cheers!

I did actually get The H&R USH, with the Nikon slughunter scope.  It was my first time shoting this gun, and at 100 yards of two shots I stacked them, so at 100 yards I can get 1 inch groups.

Hope this helps

One more vote for the H@R ultra slugger 12 ga.  My Gun likes the remington coppers best 1.5 at 100 yards.
