uberti birdshead
« on: February 06, 2008, 01:59:35 PM »
Hey
My next pistol might be an uberti birdshead. I noticed it has a firing pin spur. I have no problem with this but what safety does it have with the spur? and do i have to carry it on an empty chamber?? will it go off if dropped??

hey Richard
I was in a restraunt when a law dawgs pistol went off when it hit the ground. His service revolver, it was a colt. landed on the spur, shot him in the leg. It looks like the same setup as the birdshead, Richard. LOL

Yes, the old 'Colt' style guns were to be carried with an empty under the hammer.  BUT, for a few years, Uberti built a gun with a hammer block in the face of the hammer.  If you have one of these guns, you may carry it with six, providing you put the hammer on the first click.  If you look closely at the hammer on one of these guns, there is a separate piece of steel just below the firing pin.  When you pull the hammer back to the first click, (called the 'safety notch' but it isn't) this piece swivels up and sets into a notch in the frame making a solid and safe hammer block.  Check the picture of mine below.  These are the only Uberti's that are safe to carry with six, and even at that, I only do so occasionally.  This was one of the neatest, unobtrusive safety for a SAA type gun.  Unfortunately many traditionalists didn't like it on the hammer and Uberti no longer builds them this way.  44 Man
