Lead prices!!!
« on: February 06, 2008, 05:01:17 PM »
I called the local salvage yard not big, but I know the guy. He told me that they wear paying $25.00 fore the bigger tractor /18 Wheeler battery's full of acid or not. The core charge is only $6.00 you could take the hit and make $19.00 a battery. If the lead is worth that much in a dirty condition. That could be a indication of prices to come. I was once told that a average car battery has 28 to 35# of lead in them. But how do you get it out!! I know most bullet casters don't go through much lead but one golf ball weighs 1#  so a 5gal bucket of WW makes about 75 rounds.

first and most important reason for not using car battery's is there is chemicals in them that will make very bad things happen to you from cancer to death another thing 99.9% of the people do not have the first idea as to how to open one up safely and get rid of the contents safely in a regular car battery there is not that much lead worth saving so my advice to those thinking of using a car battery DON"T DO IT D Crodkett

I bought some lead from EBAY that was melted car battery's. The lead was smelted in a large plant I guess, then the stuff taken off.
The lead was hard. it would probably be ok for pistols or regular rifle bullets. My muzzleloader does not like ti that much. It is very hard to get down the barrel.  If I would have known about it being melted car batteries I would have never got it.  Ron

I got some from Saunders Lead  in Troy, Alabama. Recycled car batteries and as soft as it could be. I suppose it depends on the foundry...
