need advice on new .25-06
« on: February 07, 2008, 09:16:55 AM »
I am in the market for a .25-06.  Money is a little tight but I should be able to spend about $600 on the rifle.  Right now I am looking at the Ruger M77 Hawkeye (standard or all weather), Remington 700 SPS stainless, or a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter.  I don't know a whole lot about any of these guns so feel free to educate me and help me make a good choice.
Thanks

I like Remingtons, but I'm sure any of the three would work fine.

I have a Ruger mKII 25-06 and a Hawkeye in 7mm-08.  Both are the most accurate guns in my safe.  You cannot go wrong with this.  What kind of scope are you putting on?

Haven't purchased the scope for it yet but it will more than likely be a Burris Fullfield II.

for the price the Vanguard in blued or stainless is probably the least expensive, while still giving -- i'd expect -- very good accuracy.     it's trigger can be somewhat lightened.    mine in .270 win' is a dream for shooting off a stick or off a bench.   if using it for long-range shooting, with little walking, that's the rifle i'd consider.    it is a little too heavy for walking a long ways.

if walking is on the agenda, i'd go with a lighter rifle by Rem' or Ruger.    either one would be a very good rifle, with the Ruger M77 MkII being my idea of the best "all weather" rifle i've seen.   it's just very expensive in the new Hawkeye iteration.

here's one last pitch:  if i could find a model 700 adl' syn' in .270 Win' at a reasonable price, i'd go for that instead of a .25-06.    that's an accurate, long-range, bell-ringer of a caliber, in a very decent walk-around rifle.   i know.   i owned one that i let my buddy eventually have because of how generous he's been to me.    with light bullets, using IMR 4064, jack o'connor loved it for varmints.    and with 100 grain Hornady spirepoints it should be good on most of the larger deer at medium to longer range, with proper shot placement.    otherwise you'll waste meat with that bullet, i'd expect.

take care,

I have used Nikon Monarch UCC 3*9 powers on each of mine, and have been very happy.  Those were a tough choice over the Burris, which has always been really attractive.  I am not that wild about the new Nikons coming out with the third knob.  I am thinking of adding a .308 to my collection.  Have you used the Burris Fullfield II before?  How have they performed?

If your leaning toward the Weatherby, why not save money and buy a Howa. Same rifle, and less money. I have been shooting, and reloading the 2506 since 1971. Have owned 7 different rifles, 3 Rugers, 4 Remingtons. ALL shot very well, but preferred the Remingtons. Just don't cheat the cartridge with too short a barrel.

If you just want an out of the box accurate rifle and don't care if it is ugly buy a Savage, probably the best bet for an out of the box accurate cheap rifel on the market.  Larry

I have a Savage 110P which has a 24" heavy barrel on it. I bought a B&C stock and I like it's look. Many call the Savage ugly because it has the barrel nut on it. It's this barrel nut that allows you to change out barrels in a matter of minutes. This particular gun is pretty heavy and I use it for setting up on the ground for the first light and late afternoon hunts. A very accurate rifle.

I don't know if this is good or bad for you but the Hawkeye 25-06 has a heavier barrel than the other Hawkeyes.

Also the Vanguard has a different barrel, a totaly different stock, and a fluted bolt that the Howa doesn't.
This doesn't make it better just different.

I've got my eye on a Howa/Hogue in 25-06, $406 plus tax. It has a 22" bbl. I don't know how that will compare with the 26" bbl which most seem to use. Anyone been down that road?

the last i knew the vanguard had a 24" barrel, with a better scope (bushnell banner) than the howa when buying a package rifle.    i don't want a 22" barrel on an overbore cartridge like the .25-06.    the vanguard is a howa made to weatherby standards with the accuracy guarantee.    i think you're better of with the vanguard; and like i said before, i own one.

take care,

I would STRONGLY suggest that you do not buy a 22" barrel in this round.  I have been shooting this round off & on since the late 70's
& have chronied many, so I am not quessing. I would buy a 24" as a minimum & a 26" is prefered.

Out of the choices, I would go with the Rem as number 1 with the realization that you may need to have the rec. bedded, maybe not. The Rem has a great trigger & is the best choice for tweeking.  2nd choice would be the Vanguard in the sub MOA version only to get the better stock. You may need a better trigger. I only like the 25-06 if it is in a VERY good shooter & then it is one of my favorites. If you are less picky you can disregard some of this.
