30 cal XTP hollow points through a Chrony?
« on: July 04, 2003, 09:13:28 AM »
P.J, came up yesterday, and we tested some of my hand loads for my CZ-52.  Sellier and Bellot factory ammo worked just fine, but registered 1500+ fps and not their claimed 1650 fps.  I tried my 90 gr XTP's, and they repeatedly registered a little over 400 fps, and these things are loaded really hot.  Has anyone seen this before with XTP pistol hollow points?  I figure it had something to do with the big hollow point pushing turbulence ahead of it.  We also tried 40 gr .22 sabots that were loaded extremely hot, and they didnt register correctly either.
....make it count

It has more to do with the angle and brightness of light. Mine usually worked better on a overcast day and if you tried it on light ground (sand/snow) it wouldnt register correctly either. It worked well when it was new but got worse with age. Put one of those XTP's through the center of it and buy a Oehler. :)

The only time my Oehler 35 doesn't read correctly is if you have one of the skyscreens in the shade and the others in the sunlight, or the other way around.  I know some guys swear by the Chrony, but I know plenty who swear at them too.  I'd take Duffy's advice and sell that Chrony to someone you don't like.  The Oehler will measure airgun pellets with no problem.  The proof channel is also a nice feature if you want to buy the extra skyscreen.
