Skinner sights, ebay ad, opinions
« on: February 08, 2008, 09:19:09 AM »
Hello I am new to marlins.  I recently bought a model 336 30/30 and am shooting reduced load with lead bullets.  I was thinking of adding a peep sight to the gun.  On ebay item # 120219712333 is a skinner sight.  I sorta liked the looks of it over the wiliams.  A tang mounted would be nice as well.  Has anyone any experience with the skinner, a tang or williams?  I have my factory sight all the way up to comp for the 1200 fps load I am shooting do you think  the skinner would allow for eneogh elevation?   What peeps are you folks using with reduced loads?  Any insight appreciated.  I am away from the net on weekend so don't take lack of replys as lack of interest.  SN

If your talking about the Skinner Ghost ring, I here they are every bit as good as an XS ghost ring for half the price. I think you would have enough adjustment for elevation for a 30-30. If they are like XS sights, they have a long elevation adjustment shank on them. In my opinion, unless your going to use this sight say for 100 yds or less, it would work fine. I think the williams would be more accurate because it's along the lines of a peep sight with a smaller apature. I have an XS ghost / scout setup on my 1895, but I use it for dangerous game and a quick shot if needed. I have a Williams peep on my .35 and it gives me great groups at 100 yds. I use a tang sight on my buffalo 45-70. I shoots great with is sight, but takes a lot of practice to get use to it at different ranges.

Thanks for the response.    You gave me the perfect answer.  I was wanting a plinking sight that might see a deer hunt.  Looks like the williams is the way to go for that, the skinner looks lots nicer on the gun but I need practical.  I understand your peep sight 45-70.  I used to shoot bpcr silhouette with a roller and and tang sight.   Great fun watching a 500 meter ram topple from a home cast bullet and 65 grains of black, I really miss doing that.   Thanks again for the direction on the sight.  Sharp-Nut
