12 ga Brenneki 3'' 1-3/8 oz slug
« on: February 08, 2008, 08:52:33 PM »
Would anyone ever consider using a 12 ga Brenniki 3'' 1-3/8 oz slug to hunt a cape buffalo?

Only if I didn't have a substantial rifle rifle with me at that moment!  Big slug, but it is only lead, and would deform too much I believe!

I shot a heavy magnum slug at a whitetail doe from my treestand. The deer was walking diagonally towards me when I fired. The slug hit her right on the point of the shoulder and knocked her down. When field-dressing the deer I noticed that the slug was in MANY tiny pieces. The largest piece of lead that I could find was about the size of a green pea. I would not choose to use slugs on larger animals if I had a choice.

The following year I switched to Federal Barnes Premium slugs. More accurate and 100% weight retention.

The old 8 and 4 bore guns were essentially really big shoguns.

I bet with a full brass shell and a hard lead bullet at 1600fps @ 1oz, a 12G could take a bufffalo, but it not be as effective s just using an appropriate rifle. If it was that effective, it would have been done most likely. Think about, most of what we know today in gun design came from turn of the century (20th century). There has been a bullet revolution in the last 20 years thanks to better metallurgy. most efforts on shotguns is on improving range and accuracy on midsize game rather than development of ammo for large game.

Thanks for deleting the orginal post.  And replying to it so it comes to the top of the list and wasting our time opening it.

Please do not delete post.  It waste our time and space on the webpage.  Someone might have a simular question later and can find the info by searching instead of reposting the same or simular questions.
