Is it just me? or does poor grammar make it hard to read?
« on: February 08, 2008, 11:42:52 PM »
Hi All,

Been doing a little reading and some of the posts are hard to read due to the poor spelling and grammar. I will freely admit that my grammar is not quite all it should be and my typing skills leave a little to be desired as well, but I at least try to get it right, but some folks either just don't care or are possibly so poorly educated that they cannot write properly.

So what do you all think?

I get into a hurry at times and fail to use spell check.
There are plenty of times I look at an item for sale and think the guy cannot spell... how did he take care of the gun?

I find myself doing the same thing.
Getting in a hurry and forget letters and worst of all forget spell check.

I'm with you, though I often use abbreviated words such as, "I'm withya" or "donno" for I don't know. Seems the way of the world these days.....

It's the Rock Star, Rap Star, and Pro Athlete influence on things. And here in the states, the "achievement" tests have been debased to the nadir so the poorest performer won't feel badly about themselves. And, of course, the semi-literate revel in the Harvard study that says if all the correct letters are in the word, it is recognizable even if they are not in the right order.

I find the poor grammar and spelling to be mildly annoying... I find childish little "names" like demoncrat or hitlery to be incredibly annoying.

Rednecks? Hmmmm I got to meet a group of them whilst hunting Northern Missouri back in 2003. They pitched their tent next to ours and some of their stories were hair raising to say the least. Their disregard for the game and the laws was unbelievable. I saw one small Buck they "harvested" that was shot to pieces  :o it had been hit at least 7 times. The "hunter- and I use that term lightly ::)" told he later how he mowed it down reloading twice? he put his poor marksmanship down to the 3 Six packs he had drunk and whilst he was telling us about it round our fire he was drinking yet another beer. Luckily for us were were hunting on a private farm of 1100 acres so were fairly safe from them being several miles away from thier hunting preserve.

If we discount their lack of ethics on hunting they were not a bad bunch but not one I would like to hunt anywhere near. Sure we had the odd drink round the fire at night but not to the extent of getting tight or drunk. I think the most I saw anyone drink in our tent was 3 drinks in one night. It was explained to me on my arrival that no Bucks were to be shot unless their antlers were wider than their ears. This was their rule and I was a guest so I stuck to it. All four of us got chances of shooting qualifying Bucks but Stewart turned his up hoping for a better Buck which he did not find, both other brothers shot Bucks as did I, we also shot several Does and none fo the meat was wasted as it all found good deserving homes.

Edit:-  As I said before I don't type very well and American spell check doesn't recognize quite a few English words!!!! when typing I find that my brain is not running the same speed as my fingers ..................... so I end with letters transposed and in the wrong order or I don't quite press the key hard enough and lose a letter here and there.

Well its ironic that Brithunter spelled some wrong looks like he was in a hurry and then grammar is spelled wrong in the subject line too. I know I make quite a few of mistakes with my grammar but hey It has gotten better since I have figured out how to use the keyboard right. :D

I find those posts difficult to read.  You don't have to use perfect English, but at least try to capitalize properly, use the spell check, and use some semblance of proper grammar.  Of course, some people are doing the best they can, and some people just plain want to come across like morons!

Hi

"Sien ek kan dit alles in Afrikaans skryf maar julle gaan dit nie verstaan nie!"

If I translate this it means : See I can write everything in Afrikaans but you won't
understand it!  ;D

So you will just have to live with my grammar and spelling!

Cheers

Yes I know I make mistakes  ::) I even said so in the first Post. In fact one could point out that far from being a good influence and tool the internet is very poor in this respect add to that the use of text messaging and you have a recipe for total break down in written communication.

I consider myself a Redneck and I am degreed. I was born and raised in the South. Rotten teeth, tobacco spit drooling down your chin when you talk, and a Rebel flag in the back window of your ratty truck, doesn't mean you're a Redneck. It means you're White Trash. There's considerable difference between Rednecks and White trash. White trash is not unique to the south nor even to the United States.  I've met quite a few folks from abroad that would easily qualify for that title.

I agree with Cheese. Sometimes spelling something phonetically makes the "conversation" flow better.  But then, like over in AR, some guy wanted to know which of your rifles had "sole"? Now tell me anyone that graduated from the sixth grade should know the difference between sole and soul.

I have to agree with everything that has been said. No one is perfect but Huntin and Fishin are the best way it say it.

So what do you all think?

I'm well read, literate, but not so able when it comes to writing.  I think this may be a case of 2 country's divided by a common language.  Not sure who wrote it, Shaw?  Anyway, I think the point of many of these posts is to convey their ideas conceptually, if nothing else.  Most do an admiral job of it.  Regardless of their writing skills, I understand the concept of the post.  I do not let ones lack of writing skills influence my opinion in other areas of potential expertise, like handling, using, or care of guns.  I let the subject discussed determine that.

Being proud to be what some folks term as a Redneck. I like the slang and colloquialism's that are present in different parts of the USA. Some of the misspellings can make it hard to read but such is life. I guess I was unaware that perfect grammar and spelling were a prerequisite for posting on a web sight. Now look at those 2 big words I used in a post, can ya beleave a redneck could use such terms? Lifes easy if you don't sweat the small stuff.

Ok, I know that I am a Redneck but perquisite is a word I have only used once and that was just now. :D Heck I don't even know what that other word means.

The writer could also have been purposeful in their prose.  I read posts here from a Southern colloquial style writer, whom I subsequently PM'd, and found that he was practicing for writing a novel.

Some folks are good at the written word while others are some-what challenged. That being said, I`m more
interested in their comment(s) then spelling.  How bout a show of hands from all the MENSA members?  Just
trying to make a point not to offend.
I`m not here to judge anybody but rather enjoy the give and take.  Just my 2 cents.

Yeah. I used to have a laid back style like that and typed incorrecly on purpose. I found I liked typing the right way better or my way. The big words get me sometimes as math was my best subject my whole life and I have never been a good reader as I read the words and numbers backwards sometimes. Ohh well to each his own and I use yall a lot and others use "Hi All".  Its all part of the site. :)
