357 maximum loads please
« on: February 09, 2008, 11:06:15 AM »
Well went to the gun show today and brought home a 14" 357 maximum. I have some 180gr hornady xtps with h110, win296, and some little gun. These powders seem to be the most popular just wondering what youall were loading. I will mainly be using it to deer hunt with up to 100 yards thanks for any info  :)

Hodgdon has data for a 10" barrel, likely a revolver tho, they use Rem brass and 7½ primer. AA also has data online and there's Hobie's site.

I use max. loads of the Win.-296, but H-110 is supposed to be the same thing, I can just get the 296 cheaper. I`ve never used Little Gun, but hear it`s supposed to be real good also. With the 170 gn. Sierra bullets mine shoots sub-moa, but those bullets are not tough enough for the Max. velosities on deer. I think you`ll love it as long as you are always shooting from a rest.

I load for a 10" Max in a Contender, 180 Horn XTP/HP over a close-to-max load of 296, it does real well. At least on paper, haven't had the opportunity to try it on deer yet.   I've also loaded 158 XTP/HP over 296 , accuracy is good....but most will tell ya to go with the heavier bullets in the Max.  Guess they feel the XTP will explode rather than penetrate ??  I like it, light and easy to carry....and a real pleasure to shoot off the bench.

I load for a 15" .357 MAX Encore. Use mostly H110 and Lil' Gun.
My gun likes the 180 grain JSP over a middle load of H110 best, but also shoots 158 grain and 200 grain quite well. (Check the Hodgdon web site for exact numbers) Still working up loads on Lil' Gun and also H4895 (for cast 205 grain bullets).
